Q: After starting up my iMac this morning, I got a pop-up window from GOOGLE(?). I cli cked on it and another pop-up window appeared

I have recently upgraded to OS X 10.10.5. Upon starting up my iMac this morning, a pop-up window from GOOGLE (?) appeared in the upper right hand corner of my desktop. I clicked on it and the window you see below appeared. Is this legitimate or is it a scam? I have not followed through and accepted it yet. I am concerned about giving access to this information without knowing who is actually asking for it. As you know, scammers are getting very good at mimicking the look of just about anything.  I tried to contact GOOGLE about this, with zero success....can't talk to Apple because they want $35.00 before they will say anything about a simple question like this "Is it real or not?" "Is it safe". What a world we live in.......so depressing.

Can you post a screenshot of the notification supposedly from Google?

If you have Mail application to use Google Mail as a preference, it may be the Notification

Center has somehow automatically selected to offer you this option to choose Internet

Connect to set it up as a functional choice. You can choose Cancel in the window(s.)

Mac Basics: Notifications keep you informed - Apple Support

    about OS X notifications:

    https://duckduckgo.com/?q=about+OS+X+Notifications&t=ffsb

While I use gmail, I do not have any email software set up to connect; & use a browser only.

In Notifications, I have nothing selected and it is set to Do Not Disturb, so the only things

that appear there are OS X and related App Store update items regarding system software.

You can cancel the window(s) that are open regarding that application and choose to set the

Notification panel settings to not offer random or spontaneous choices like Google, like that.

And any settings you choose, can be un-done later should you wish to try them intentionally.

    Good luck & happy computing!

Unfortunately no. I didn't think to do a screen shot of this until I read the second window. Since I got your message, I have not been able to induce that first window to appear again, and it has not appeared on its own either. Thanks for asking though. I will keep an eye on my desktop and make a screen shot if it reappears.

Thank you for your response and the links you provided for information. I will have a look at these and also try what you have suggested. Hopefully, eventually, I will become more at home with the behaviour of OS X Yosemite. It seems as though it has a lot more security features built into it and I am frequently getting tripped up by this. GOOGLE keeps sending me alerts about someone using my Apple ID and phone number on a new iPhone. Consequently, they block my access. Then, even when I go through the process of resetting my password, using their website, the same thing keeps happening all over again. This is very trying when I am attempting to carry on with work. If I didn't depend on them as a search vehicle, I would get rid of them altogether. I have checked with my service provider as well as Apple and they can find no evidence of suspicious activity related to my devices......only Google does....over and over and over again. Anyway, sorry to go onlike this. It is not your problem.

    Thanks again
