Q: iMac (27", Mid 2011) Purchased 4/2012--Overheating like crazy and getting the grey screen constantly
My iMac 27" computer created Mid 2011 is overheating so bad that I can't even touch the top of it without burning myself.
I just discovered (through an internet search) that Apple was replacing (for 3 yrs only) the AMD Radeon 6970M Video Card on all iMacs sold between May 2011 and October 2012. I wish they would have notified me. It seems like this overheating of is a common problem on these iMacs. Now, everyday my iMac goes to the grey screen and then shuts down. When I boot it back up it has 5 green vertical lines across the screen with the apple logo and the status bar. Once the status bar gets about 1/3 of the way across, the screen goes to grey and shuts off and then comes back on and the process starts all over again continuously.
I have to let the computer cool down completely then restart it. So far, it has restarted and recovered...until it gets hot enough and begins the grey screen process described above. This just started Friday 8/14/2015...so I am only a day into this nightmare.
I have only had this computer since April of 2012. I expected this iMac to last longer than 3 years...that is why I invested in it. I just don't have $2000 to purchase another one. When I called Support...they suggested I purchase another iMac and get AppleCare Protection Plan anytime I buy an iMac.
Has Apple remedied this with iMacs purchased between May 2011 and October 2012? This could have disastrous results with iMac temps getting so high.
Thanks!
iMac, OS X Yosemite (10.10.4)
