Q: After 10.10.4 update older HP printers not working

After I updated to 10.10.4 (and this still holds true for 10.10.5) both of my old HP Designjet 800PS plotters and my HP Laserjet 4050 monochrome laser printers stopped working over Ethernet. In the log files I am seeing broken pipes and on the printers I get nonsense text dumps or nothing at all. If I reboot into Leopard I can print to them just fine. I have tried this with 8 different  Yosemite machines (iMacs, Mac Pros and MacBook Pros) with the same results. I can get around it for the 800PS plotters by connecting via USB to computers and sharing the plotters from them - but since the old 4050s don't have USB it seems I am SOL. I have noticed that others are reporting problems with older printers. Could it be these older units only accept smaller packets and changes in Yosemite are only sending larger packets?  If there is anyone out there with these units have you had any luck getting them to work? TIA

Sometimes after an OS update, Repair Disk Permissions magically fixed printer issues for me, especially HP printers.

If you have not already done so download and install the latest HP Printer Drivers Pkg released June 18, 2015. The LaserJet 4050 series is supported. As for the DesignJet 800PS, users reported finding success with the drivers for the 500ps.

If you haven't done so already, try resetting the printing system.

Thanks. I had already done that on the machines, along with resetting the print system. Still the same results.

The 500ps drivers are for a 24 inch plotter and we have the 42 inch 800ps. So it looks like the USB/Printer sharing solution is it for now.

Apparently a number of other older HP printers in our educational organization are reporting the same issue I reported above. IT believes now it is the older network cards on these machines not dealing well with increased multicast packet traffic. I will post more if a solution arises.

Yet, the link on the HP Printer Drivers v3.1 webpage to the list of supported printer models includes the 42-inch 500ps as well as the 510ps. See image below and also note that the print driver is version 31.0 for all the Designjet 500 series of printers. In the user thread (linked above), user MMoyle posted success by stating "My 42" DJ800 not only happily accepted the 42" 500 driver."

...and you rebooted the computer before trying to re-add the printer, yes?

Our IT department placed the old printers on their own subnet where multicast traffic was filtered out. Now all the printers work just fine again and respond quite rapidly.

A thread titled, the meaning: broken pipe on the HP Support Forum shows user Don-Law reported on 01-18-2014 that

"In my case, this error was caused by a firewall between the system running CUPS and the printer.  Make sure that both TCP port 9100 and UDP port 161 (SNMP) are open."

I don't know if this will help, but I have a HP Laserjet 4050tn printer that gave me similar problems. I tried to add the printer to my Macbook Air by using the IP address after installing Yosemite 10.10.5. I tried reinstalling the print drivers, repairing permissions, etc., etc.,. What finally worked was to select the HP Jet Direct - Socket protocol window to add the printer. I entered the IP address in that window and everything finally worked. The IP needed to be directed to the Jetdirect socket and not just to the IP address of the printer alone.

    Hope this helps.

I had the problem and removed the printer, then tried to add it. No luck -- my Yosemite system isn't finding that printer or printer type at all.

Given that the system pretends it doesn't exist, how can I still find out the IP address to try adding it via HP JetDirect socket?

...how can I still find out the IP address to try adding it via HP JetDirect socket?

Print a configuration page using front control panel on the printer.

    1. Turn off the printer. Turn the printer back on. Wait for it to warm up.
    2. Press MENU repeatedly until INFORMATION MENU is displayed.
    3. Press ITEM until PRINT CONFIGURATION appears.
    4. Press SELECT (or ENTER) to print configuration pages.

Two pages are normally printed. On the EIO # JetDirect Page, look for the LAN HW ADDRESS or IP ADDRESS value. This number is the printer's TCP/IP address.

You could also set a static IP address for the printer using the instructions by user Neil Ward1.
