If you're willing to use a tool to remove it(you don't need to, but may find it easier), you can instead run Adware Medic; this link is a direct download.
MPlayerX itself is legitimate, but the site you downloaded it from isn’t. You should avoid downloading software from sources other than the Mac App Store or the developer’s site.

Aug 17, 2015 11:15 AM in response to Nielby roxannefromriverside,thank you,, i found this on my mac as well and it would not delete out of trash either... it is gone now thus far having followed the adware link.. i also got the safari support pop up today with 1800 number that i did not call.. may i ask if a back up virus scan would be a good investment? my geek squad suggested trend micro just expired.. thank you both

Mac OS XThe popup in Safari (or any other browser) is just that - a browser popup. They are all scams hoping that you will call the number and believe the lies they will tell you. All for the simple reason to fleece you out of as much money as you're willing to sucker for.
If you can't close the page (typically, you can't), force quit Safari, then hold the shift key down while relaunching it.
