There are Finder plugins that can restore the old behavior. Are are 2 you could look at:

I'll give your suggestions a try. I did do the multiple dots but it doesn't do it for me.
I use the colors to identify clients quickly, all projects have a number and a client code, but when quickly scanning for a past project, color helps to separate things clients. Of course, grouping by color can speed things up somewhat as well.
