Q: Do I need 3 email addresses for icloud

I have my own domain (let's call it jj.com for simplicity). my email address at jj.com is my Apple ID and primary email address. I have 2 issues:

1. I want to close down my whole domain, so I have to change my primary email because it will no longer exist. When I try to change my Apple id to my icloud email, I get a message saying it can't be an Apple email. When I try to set it to my gmail address, I get a message saying my Apple ID cannot be my rescue email address.

2. Because my Apple id is my @jj.com address, and because I have set up my icloud address as an additional address, I am getting 2 copies of every email.

Do I really need 3 different email addresses to use iCloud (1 for Apple ID, 1 for rescues, and the icloud email itself)? There must be a way around that!

Thanks for any tips you can throw at me!

You don't absolutely need to have a rescue email address, but you should keep it; if you delete it and forget your security answers, you'll need to contact Apple to get back in. The other two are absolutely needed.

I would imagine it is hard for a lot of people to have or keep track of 3 email addresses! But thanks for the reply. Off I go to create another unused email address so I can replace my domain address!

    Thanks again

Your other option is to use Two Step Verification. This eliminates any need for a Rescue email address, but can introduce some other hassles like using App-specific passwords to sign on some apps (like FaceTime and Messages):

Getting a little more complicated. It seems I also created an Apple id using my rescue email. Maybe I need to back up a bit:

My apple id is an email that will soon not exist at all; the domain will be deleted. If I use my iCloud email as an alternate email, and if I have a working rescue email, does my apple id/primary email actually need to be a working email? Won't all emails sent to my primary ID also automatically go to my alternate emails?
