You will definitely get better performance from a thunderbolt drive. However, they are expensive, so if your firewire drive has acceptable performance, stick with it. Your decision.

Aug 18, 2015 2:28 PM in response to dorlan335by BenB,Forget target mode, that's a royal PITA. Boot both, put both of them on a WiFi network. If there isn't one already, make one the host of a WiFi network. Then tell the one with the CD drive to share it. You can very easily share CD/DVD drives over WiFi between Macs quickly. We did it all the time, until we dropped CD/DVD media some time back.
