You can try it and see if it asks to join a cell network, that will tell you definitively.

Keep in mind that the Apple sim is not really universal, there are only two carriers it works with in the US and one in the UK.  If you use it on the AT&T network, one of the two US carriers, the sim becomes locked to AT&T and you have to buy a new one ($10) if you want to switch to Sprint.  So, there really isn't a big incentive to use the Apple sim at this time.

I see in https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203099 that the Apple sim has now been expanded to T-Mobile and GigSky in the US.

In addition to the fine advice from Ralph Landry1 above, be aware that if it

works, the Apple sim will not provide phone capability to an iPad but will merely

provide a data connection. You will need Skype or similar app to make calls from

    an iPad.

Carrier retail store in the US or UKApple SIM will only work domestically with that carrier's network
Apple Retail Store, Apple Online Store, or other resellerApple SIM will work with any participating carrier in that country

from the apple info this is the reason I wanted the sim I am travelling to France Spain and Portugal and wanted one sim for all three countries I have been to Northern Spain and there they insist on you having a spanish landline number before they will sell you a sim not very useful unless you have a second address in spain I am slightly confused from the apple website because from their information it seems the sim will only work with the latest models for some reason I have tried contacting apple on this point but they want me to pay my 25 pounds for the privelage of asking information about their equipment and the nearest apple store is 60miles away and can't get in touch with them to find out a if they have it in stock b whether it will work with my device.

The Apple sim will only work with the supporting carriers in the US and the UK - it does not work with the carriers in France, Spain or Portugal.  The Apple website says the Apple sim is useable in the latest iPad Air 2 and iPad Mini, does not say anything about the older model you have so that is why I suggested trying one to see if it will activate.  But, that still does not address the issue of the countries you are traveling to which do not support the Apple sim.  In the case of those travel plans you will have to get a valid sim for the carriers in each country.

contrary to what you have said Ralph it states in the Official Apple blurb that

Apple Retail Store, Apple Online Store, or other resellerApple SIM will work with any participating carrier in that country

and then it goes on to say that you should be able to purchase required plan once logged into relevant carrier and not as you have mentioned above I have 2 iPads 2 iPhones an iMac Ibook air apple tv iPods and numerous other devices why would I want to take a trip of 60miles to go to an Apple store purchase a sim and then travel abroad to find out this device does not work surely Apple can give a definitive answer on this .

Can I use an overseas network with Apple SIM

Yes. According to the Apple SIM website: “when you travel, you may also be able to choose a data plan from a local carrier for the duration of your trip.”

Apple SIM is a proprietary subscriber identity module (SIM) produced by Apple Inc. It is included in cellular-enabled versions of its iPad Air 2 and iPad Mini 3 tablets in the United Kingdom and United States. The Apple SIM supports wireless services across multiple supported carriers, which can be selected from a user interface within their operating systems, removing the need to install a SIM provided by the carrier itself. While Apple did not acknowledge the feature whilst presenting the iPad models that ship with Apple SIM, promotional materials on its website discuss the feature as being geared toward users of short-term mobile internet contracts across multiple carriers.[1]

Carriers supported by Apple SIM on launch include AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile US in the United States, and EE in the United Kingdom.[1] However, activating mobile services on AT&T will permanently lock the Apple SIM to AT&T, requirin

This repeats what I said above, the Apple sim only works on specific networks in the US and the UK, there are no networks in any other country identified at this time that it will work on.

    More choices for

    staying connected.

With Apple SIM in iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3 with Wi-Fi + Cellular models, you get the convenience of choosing a cellular data plan from select carrier partners right on your iPad. And when you travel abroad, Apple SIM gives you the added flexibility to stay connected in more than 90 countries and territories around the world. So when you reach your destination and want to check your email, find directions, or send a message back home, you can purchase a cellular data plan for the duration of your trip — whether it’s a day, a week, or a month.
