Q: 10.2 bright window - mask - workaround

Hello and thank you for taking the time to read.

I am new to FCP 10.2 but am eager to learn and am very much enjoying the software.

Here is the challenge; well,  there are 2 -

1) I have GOT to do something with that window, Too bright. Either darken it, change its color to blend in more, That window appears on and off in over 5 hours of shooting. It is 1 angle of a 3 camera shoot I did. BTW I LOVE this sync multicams biz wow!  This screen cap is blown up, of course.

SEE FIG 1

2)  As you see in the screen cap below, the girl crosses into the path of the window with the foam roller. This, of course, means that it ventures into the eventual/corrected mask area on the window. (P.S. I would need whatever solution that is best to "stick" to that window and not appear when I change angles. I guess this would mean using key frames or some kind of "transform" function within the clip to define how long it should appear?)

I know this is a lot and I am in your debt for your time and help.

Thank you.

Anything is possible but I think that getting rid (or lessening the impact) of that window throughout the video is going to take an incredible amount of time-consuming labour and skill.

    There's certainly no quick fix.

That's the problem with location shooting when you don't have control over lighting, backgrounds, props etc.

It is possible to track a shape mask with 3rd party add-ins, for example see:

So you could apply a mask over the offending window and apply exposure correction to it.

I'm no expert with this though and I don't know if the effect would be good enough - others can probably give more info

I think you can try luma keying to make the window transparent and then put more comfy window under the clip. But I'm not really sure that FCPX is the best tool for that purpose

Luma or chroma keying is the quick and easy solution.  I've done this a lot over the years.  It works great.

Apply a Color Correction effect to the clip.

Apply a color key with that CC effect.

In the color boards, only work with the Inside settings, and tone it down "slightly"!  Too much will give horrible results.

Be sure to add a little feathering so that it isn't too obvious.

Possible issue, you have other whites in the shot.  You may need to use the Keyer effect and go into the Mask controls to dial in that window specifically, so that her white clothing isn't included.  But should be easy enough to do.  Not a big deal.

    Hi Ben

What a concise reply, thank you. I don;t really know how to do what you are suggesting and I am not about to ask for a free course in FCP 10.2. However, I am very grateful and I think I can get close to what you outlined.

I will let you know how it goes and thank you and everyone for your time.
