Open Finder preferences, click on the Advanced icon in the toolbar. Set the dropdown menu to Search the Current Folder:

If you now use the Finder search it will search starting in the current folder and all sub-folders of that folder.

Open the folder and type Command+F.  Then setup your criteria, either in the search field or by the other options that show themselves:

I finally figured out that next to "Search:" where it says "This Mac" and "folder name", that it's not telling me that it's searching in this mac and in this folder.  It's an either/or option and all I needed to do was click on "folder name".  I was thinking of it the same way as the file location information at the bottom, where the words to the right are a further refinement of the words to the left e.g. Documents > Recipes > Vegetarian.  This was driving me absolutely crazy for weeks.  But now that I've got it sorted out I'm really glad I didn't go on that murder/suicide spree I was contemplating.  Thanks guys.  It's life-saving work you're doing.  You're the real heroes.
