Q: Backup Can't Be Copied - Doesnt Have Ownership Enabled

All I want to do is copy my backups.backupDB folder to an existing 3TB external HD that I am using already.  I cant because I am getting this message and I have not found an option in 10.9 that allows me to enable ownership.

I also cant use the Disk Utility Restore Option because it means I have to erase the existing 3TB drive first that I want to just copy my Time Machine Backup to.

Open the Terminal in your Utilities folder. At the prompt paste the following up to the first bracket:

sudo chown -R root:admin [drag the disk's Desktop icon here]

Press RETURN. Enter your admin password when prompted. It will not echo to the Terminal window.

That  didnt seem to work.... it was going on forever and for each line said 'Operation Not Permitted'

I have no clue how terminal commands work so I dont know what admin means in that command line.  But I still cannot simply copy the time machine backup folder to another external drive.

If you just wish to transfer a Time Machine backup drive to another drive, do not attempt to copy files. That will not work. Use the Restore option of Disk Utility:

Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility

      1. Open Disk Utility in the Utilities folder.

      2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.

      3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.

      4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag

it to the Destination entry field.

      5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to

          the Source entry field.

      6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.

Destination means the new external Time Machine drive. Source means the current Time Machine drive.

I did see this suggestion made before unfortunately it says that the drive I am copying to will be erased ... its a 3TB drive that I have stuff on that I dont want deleted, I just need the time machine backup files copied to.

Partition the drive and then follow Kappy's suggestion.

Creating a partition isn't hard. Restart with command - R held down and open Disk Utility.

Step 1 - select the top level hard drive.

Step 2 - select the Partition tab.

Step 3 - grab the //// to slide the partition up to make room for a new partition.

Step 4 - select the vacant space and hit the + sign.

Step 5- Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and add a name.

Step 5a, click and select GUID.

    Then Apply.
