Aug 19, 2015 4:48 PM in response to mrod828by Kappy,Open the Terminal in your Utilities folder. At the prompt paste the following up to the first bracket:
sudo chown -R root:admin [drag the disk's Desktop icon here]
Press RETURN. Enter your admin password when prompted. It will not echo to the Terminal window.

Aug 19, 2015 6:32 PM in response to Kappyby mrod828,That didnt seem to work.... it was going on forever and for each line said 'Operation Not Permitted'
I have no clue how terminal commands work so I dont know what admin means in that command line. But I still cannot simply copy the time machine backup folder to another external drive. -
Aug 19, 2015 7:02 PM in response to mrod828by Kappy,If you just wish to transfer a Time Machine backup drive to another drive, do not attempt to copy files. That will not work. Use the Restore option of Disk Utility:
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
1. Open Disk Utility in the Utilities folder.
2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag
it to the Destination entry field.
5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
the Source entry field.
6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the new external Time Machine drive. Source means the current Time Machine drive.

Aug 20, 2015 10:03 AM in response to mrod828by Eric Root,Partition the drive and then follow Kappy's suggestion.
Creating a partition isn't hard. Restart with command - R held down and open Disk Utility.
Step 1 - select the top level hard drive.
Step 2 - select the Partition tab.
Step 3 - grab the //// to slide the partition up to make room for a new partition.
Step 4 - select the vacant space and hit the + sign.
Step 5- Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and add a name.
Step 5a, click and select GUID.
Then Apply.
