Hi Ralph Thanks for a very prompt reply. As I said I know almost nothing about computers and had assumed I could get a free download. I'll need to do some research to see which the best upgrade would be

    Thanks again

HI David, the only Mac OS X that is free Yosemite.  All previous versions that are still available have a fee attached to them.  It is nominal, though.

If you are concerned about negative comments about Yosemite, you could consider waiting for El Catitan sometime this Fall...that will be free download.

Also look at your Mac and be sure it meets the requirements for any of these newer OS X versions: http://www.apple.com/osx/specs most important is the year of your Mac model.  Since it came with Lion it should be ok but look at the specs to be sure.

    Hi Ralph

Many thanks again. I think I shall do as you suggest. I am in no hurry to upgrade, I'm just becoming aware that there are several more advanced version of OSX available and wondered if it was time. I think I should do some research into Yosemite and then look at the new system you mention when its released.

    Much obliged

    You are very welcome, Daviv.

In doing your research, look at the features that have been added to the newer OS X versions - ask yourself if you need or want to use those features.  A great deal of the additions since Lion are focused on integration of Mac OS X and iOS...that is, mailing your Mac and iPhone/iPad work together.  Do you have iOS devices and do you want them to interface with your iMac?

Also note that Apple phases out updating and active support of OS X versions over time.  The latest Yosemite update, 10.10.5, has a huge list of security patches and updates that were made.  You can query that info by clicking the magnifying glass to the right of the menu  bar of this page, the search feature, and type/search on Mac OS X security updates.  You should be able to find the latest Apple information on what the release contains, and also the Mac OS X versions that also are eligible for the security updates.  You will see that the updates have a version cutoff point.  So keep in mind that eventually Lion will stop getting updates, and what does that mean for your work?

    Just some thoughts, David.
