Q: Mails send with Apple Mail get displayed always with font times new roman. Is there are workaround? When does Apple fix this. It´s unprofessional if you have to use mail for business.

It´s hard to believe that Apple hasn´t fixed this problem until now, that every mail I send to a PC get displayed with times new roman.

I´m using Apple Mail for my business mails also. So this is a problem.

Are there any other having the same problem? Does anyone know a professional workaround to get this under control?

Unfortunately you are correct. This usability fail is still present in Yosemite. And so I've sent Apple the exact same feedback about it as I have for all their recent releases. Universal Mailer still functions as a workaround. Hopefully that won't change anytime soon.

    Nailed it!

That perfectly describes the problem and the reason why it's there.

But this discussion and forum is for Macs running OS X, not iphones/ipads running iOS.  If you want to help for those devices, you need to go to

Little bit late to the game but this kind of attitude does not help Apple build great software. I admire people spend their own time bring up issues to light. Software developers should listen to users and fix the **** issue if they don't want to lose their customers.

They don't seem to think customer loss is much a threat from this particular issue, it remains in El Capitan as far as I know.

This is still an issue with Mail 9.0 on En Captain. I'm not talking about the text-only emails and I understand the client's setting will dictate the viewing font on it. However, the Mail app should allow users to set the font for HTML body. That's my complaint. Other mail clients allow you to do that.

Here is a bit more detail about Mail app not allowing me to set the font.

HTML mail source generated from OS X: http://pastie.org/10456302

(I set the font to Calibri which is Outlook's default font. Mail app just doesn't use the font I chose.)

    From Outlook 2013: http://pastie.org/10456304

(Outlook generates more HTML code than Mail app but hey, my emails from Outlook look consistent in other mail clients.)

Another odd behavior I noticed is that Mail app sets the correct font if I select any default fonts. (e.t. Arial, Menlo or anything came with OS X) It seems to be an issue when I tried to use an additional fonts (manually installed) such as Calibri.

    Evidence: http://pastie.org/10456330

    Apple, please look into this.

I appreciate your frustration with this issue. Believe me I do. Here's some free advice for you to take or leave as you will ...

This is a really simply fix. There's nothing at all complicated about what we are asking. All other major email clients do it.  But this has been an issue since at least OS X 10.4. We are now on OS X 10.11 and it's still an issue. So clearly Apple has no intention whatsoever of ever addressing it. I've reported this as a bug in every OS X release since 10.4 except for El Capitan. I choose not to even bother anymore. Spare yourself any unnecessary spikes in your blood pressure and just install Universal Mailer.

Thank you for your input, Ondray.

I've been using Universal Mailer plugin but we will have to wait until UM release a new version for El Captain. I was wondering why can't Apple write that plugin or just buy out UM. That said, I will wait for a new version of UM.

Not really. Go to the FAQ section and it has instructions on how to modify UM so that it will run in El Capitan. You don't have to wait for a new version.

    Hello Guys

I've eventually found the same solution via just a small workaround!

My Microsoft Outlook for Mac is actually having the same problem as does Apple Mail

On Windows Outlook I always wanted the font type to be Tahoma in the size of 10

However I realised that on Outlook for Mac the size of 10 should be adjusted to be 13 instead in order to appear to be exactly the same as rendered on Windows Outlook

Therefore on Outlook for Mac I set the default font type to be Calibri in the size of let's say 18 ---> then I compose a new email and type out a few letters which of course will appear to be Calibri in the size of 13 ---> then I highlight those letters ---> re-adjust the font type to be Tahoma in the size of 13 ---> then send it out to a free webmail or Windows Outlook ---> Voila!!! Everything looks exactly the same on all laptops and PCs...yoohoo~~~

Just simply do the same on Apple Mail ---> remember, always set the default FONT and FONT SIZE to be different than the one you wanted ---> then re-adjust them again!

    HAPPY!

    HERE'S THE DEFINITIVE SOLUTION

Hello everyone, so I too have had this problem ever since I made the move to Mac, 12 months ago. Firstly with Outlook 2011 which often resulted in a complete mismatch of fonts on the recipients mail client, then more recently after I dumped Outlook in favour of Mail (after looking at all the other popular mail apps around which just didn't do the job I wanted). Mail doesn't have all the functionality that Outlook has, but it is the best alternative and the font results are nothing like as bad as I found with Outlook. But they're not good either.

The solution is simple. Universal Mailer. Several of the posts above recommend it, so I thought I'd give it a go last night. I downloaded and installed in on my Macbook Pro and within a few minutes of a tiny bit of trial and error playing with the font configuration, the problem was solved.  Today I've done the same on my iMac and problem solved.  All my emails are now being displayed on the recipients email client (usually Outlook) in my desired font (Calibri 12) and my signature block is consistent as well. Everything else I've tested and it's all working.

Universal Mailer works with Mavericks, Yosemite and El Capitan (I've tested it with Yosemite as I'm holding back upgrading at the moment), and it's free. Donations to the developers are optional, but I'm certainly going to make one - one major ongoing hassle solved. Fantastic.
