Aug 19, 2015 3:22 AM in response to guitarposterby lllaass,On both machines (if you still have the old on) depress and hold the Option key and then click on the wifi icon in upper right part of Menu bar. A window opens displaying info about the connected network
Post a screen shot of that window

Aug 19, 2015 2:13 PM in response to guitarposterby Linc Davis,The warranty entitles you to complimentary phone support for the first 90 days of ownership.
If you bought the product in the U.S. directly from Apple (not from a reseller), you have 14 days from the date of delivery in which to exchange or return it for a refund. In other countries, the return policy may be different. If you bought from a reseller, its return policy applies.

Aug 19, 2015 2:55 PM in response to guitarposterby guitarposter,Thank you Linc and Illaas for your advice.
I just spent three hours on the phone with Mac support cleaning up files and running diagnostics with an upper level techie, but the problem just got worse and the Speedtest results were in the dial-up modem range. They made me a Genius bar appt. for next week (earliest available) and said the details of our session would be in the database and would not count against the two week return time-frame. Then I backed up the drive with Time Machine figuring if I have to reinstall to a new machine the new "cleaned up" drive would be the one to use. I went to lunch and when I came back and now the speeds seem normal.
I've had two other similar problems. When I first hooked everything up the sound didn't work, neither the internal speaker nor the headphone jack. The sound icon saw the headphone jack and the internal speaker but none of the controls in the sound preference had any effect. I had a session on that issue with a techie who said I'd have to take it to the store. A few hours later I was on a website and the sound suddenly started working. I also had trouble with Adobe CS4, and worked with an Adobe techie to get everything working except Acrobat, which would launch but display no controls whatsoever and would not launch any files. I was resigned to buying a stand alone version of Acrobat, but the next morning I opened an email and clicked on a PDF and suddenly Acrobat was working fine, almost as if the computer just needed a good night's sleep.
Very confusing.
Thanks again,
Scott

Aug 20, 2015 12:44 PM in response to guitarposterby Ricky Riccardi, those are some strange problems. usually a reboot fixes most. I find a cold boot (complete shutdown and power off) will give the system a complete reset. I had problems connecting to my mac mini via afp. I shut it down, and the next day I had no problems. its been good ever since.

Aug 20, 2015 9:51 PM in response to Ricky Riccardiby guitarposter,To those on this thread, here's my latest:
After posting yesterday that everything turned out hunky dory and the new Mac mini was A-OK the Wi-FI went completely South about an hour later, so by this morning I was not a happy camper. The wait for a genius at opening bell at 10 was over two hours. So I exchanged the lemon Mac mini for a new one.
After several hours everything seems to be functioning well, with critical apps updating ok (I think). I'd been perfectly happy with Snow Leaopard, which ran everything I could possibly want on a MacBook Pro but was failing. All the new bells and whistles of the last few years don't much interest me, and losing the email program Eudora is infuriating.
There are other Mac issues which have ticked me off over the decades, like dumbing down iMovie by discontinuing iMovie HD. But that had workarounds. Losing Eudora is more Qualcomm's fault than Apple's, since they orphaned it. But you'd think that Apple, with all its resources, would try to emulate the most functional email program ever instead of sticking to the ponderous specs of its own Mail program. But then they dumbed down iMovie, perhaps because it was too good and cut into Final Cut Pro's sales? So maybe it's some kind of corporate profit thing.
Oh well.
Thanks for everyone's advice. If the new Mac mini has problems I'll let you know.
Scott
