Q: Failed on upgrade to Yosemite(can't open  "essentials.pkg"), and now need help to boot os from remote disk

Hey All,

I tried to upgrade my mac os 10.6.8 to Yosemite  and it consistently fails on Update failing at unpacking "essentials.pkg"

Now I am trying to install the os from disks that I got with my macBookAir.

Unfortunately I have no disk reader in the notebook, so I need help to config the remote disk from the disk-utility that I got in the "safe mode".

I tried to set  :

defaults write com.apple.NetworkBrowser EnableODiskBrowsing -bool true

defaults write com.apple.NetworkBrowser ODSSupported -bool true

And then restart to computer, and again no seeing anything in the disk utility.

Please help me to recover any OS.

What else can I do?

Thanks!

Do you have another Mac with an optical drive to use with Remote Disc? If not then you need to buy a USB external optical drive such as the Apple USB SuperDrive. Other possibilities can be found at OWC or Best Buy.

    Clean Install of Snow Leopard

         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came

with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.

After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see

a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.

         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue

button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.

After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive

size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of

partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button

and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended

(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.

         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed

with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.

         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup

Assistant. After you finish Setup Assistant will complete the installation after which

you will be running a fresh install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process

by opening Software Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your

             installation current.

Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

Yes, but you will need a Mac to do it. You cannot create a bootable USB installer for the Mac on a Windows computer.

Please try again after taking each of the following steps that you haven't already taken.

    Step 1

    Reset your computer’s PRAM.

    Step 2

If your model has user-replaceable memory, and you've upgraded the memory modules, reinstall the original memory and see whether there's any improvement. Be careful not to touch the gold contacts. Clean them with a mild solvent such as rubbing alcohol. Aftermarket memory must exactly match the technical specifications of the machine.

    Step 3

Back up all data to at least two different storage devices, if you haven't already done so. One backup is not enough to be safe. The backups can be made with Time Machine or with Disk Utility. Preferably both.

Erase and install OS X. This operation will destroy all data on the startup volume, so you had be better be sure of the backups.

    Step 4

Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider to have the machine tested.
