Q: Just installed new ssd.  How do I use my Time Machine backup on an external usb 3.0 hard drive to install yosemite os?

Just installed new ssd.  Before I did this I used Time Machine to back up my old/original hard drive onto an external usb 3.0 hard drive.  How do I use the Time Machine back up to install yosemite os on my new ssd?

MacBook Pro (15-inch 2.4/2.2 GHz), OS X Yosemite (10.10.2)

Since you can't boot from Time Machine and the Recovery partition went with the HD you removed, you may be able to start up using Internet Recovery. But since you don't state which specific MBP you have, it's not clear if that came built in. If it didn't you might have been able to install that after the fact. If Internet Recovery is available, follow the instructions on how to boot into it.

Unless you prepared the SSD for use on a Mac, you'll need to do that first, Note that reinstalling the OS will give you whichever version of OS X the Mac came with. Instead, in Disk Utility, repartition the SSD using one partition, a Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format, and, in Options, a GUID Partition Table.

Then, rather than reinstalling the OS, try restoring from your Time Machine Backup.
