Q: logic pro 9 transfer to new Macbook pro

Having recently bought a new macbook pro I used Migration assistant to transfer everything to my new computer including Logic pro 9.

When opening Logic I realised that none of the sounds were there and saw that I needed to download the additional content, which I have now done and is showing as installed. However there are a large number of instrument sounds that do not work - one example is steinway piano which gives me the error message 'EXS24 instrument "Steinway Piano.exs" not found.' Sure enough when I go to the logic folder in application support the files dont seem to be there.

In addition to this there are some instruments such as Bosendorfer piano which when clicked on open up a window. At the top is a space designer file(see below)

Have had a look around some forums and it seems migration assistant is not a good way to go for transferring Logic, and unfortunately I have already got rid of my old computer. Only solution I can think of now is to delete and reinstall using the discs, but just thought I would see if there is another solution as I will lose all my plugins etc. Many thanks in advance!

As has been often said and repeated here....

It is never a good idea to use Migration Assistant to transfer Logic or any of it's content or 3rd party plugins and libs over to a new Mac from an older one... because typically you will get these kind of errors and issues that are a nightmare to resolve.

    Suggested solution?

Start again from scratch, reformat and reinstall OS X on your system drive using the Recovery partition.

OS X: About OS X Recovery - Apple Support

Manually re-install Logic Pro 9 and it's content..... either via the App Store or via the DVDs depending on which version you originally bought.

Given you are running Yosemite, don't forget to update LP9 to 9.1.8 before you first launch it!

    No DVD player? See the following;

Use the CD or DVD drive from another computer with your Mac - Apple Support

    Test....

Install all drivers for external hardware (checking they are compatible with your current OS X version first)

    Test...

Reinstall all 3rd party plugins and libs.... (Checking they are compatible with your current OS X version first..)

    Test....

Manually copy across all personal docs/projects/wave files and other such self created data....

    Test...

Now download/install all other 3rd party apps...

    Test...

    Done..

Yes, its a real PITA but don't try and take any shortcuts as it has long been proven to be the right way to do this to avoid issues and problems in the future... so that you end up with a stable system.

    Cheers..

Thanks very much for taking the time to reply, and yes felt stupid that I had not checked out if migration assistant would work for logic before using it.

Took the steps you suggested, curiously though Yosemite reinstalled but retained all of my files, I then deleted Logic and then reinstalled with the discs (including the update) and it is now working fine whilst also retaining my plug ins and files. Not quite sure how but not complaining!

    thanks again for your help

That is because you didn't do this step.....

Start again from scratch, reformat and reinstall OS X on your system drive using the Recovery partition.

You just reinstalled OS X over the top of your original installation... instead of reformatting and then reinstalling.....

But... as it happens it seems you were lucky and so it all worked out fine.....

    Glad I could help!

    Cheers..
