Q: Backup & upgrade of iPhone: how do I keep my apple watch data?

Hello! I have just upgraded my iPhone 5S (used from day 1 to pair my apple watch) to an iPhone 6.

My question is: how do I get my apple watch to pair with the new iphone?

Am I supposed to impair from iphone 5S, take an iCloud back up, restore it on the new iPhone 6 and then pair it with the apple watch?

I Do not want to loose the Activity & Workout data.

IS there a safe mode for doing it?

Thank you!!!!

    Hi

The process that you have outlined is ideal.

iCloud backups of your iPhone are encrypted as standard, so Health data - along with other sensitive information - is included.

Unpairing your Apple Watch first - via the Apple Watch app - will also ensure that a fully up to date backup of your Apple Watch is included within the backup of the iPhone 5S.

When you pair your iPhone 6 with Apple Watch, choose to restore your watch from backup when the option is offered. Most data and settings on your watch will be restored except for: calibration data (from Workout and Activity apps), synced playlists, cards used for Apple Pay on your watch and your watch passcode.

Also: after switching over to your iPhone 6, you can recalibrate your Apple Watch by following the instructions here:

I just reset my iPhone 5s, then went to iTunes and did a restore from iCloud

After this process completed, I found that my Apple Watch viewed my device as  a new iPhone

I went through the pairing procedure, but I now find that my Fitness data On my iPhone Health App is gone.  Two months worth of data is no longer there?

Is there some way to retrieve it?

    Hi Jack

It sounds like you have set up your iPhone as new and restored iTunes purchases, rather than restoring your iPhone from an iCloud backup. You restore from an iCloud backup during the Setup process after resetting your iPhone; it does not involve using iTunes.

First check that you have previously chosen to back up your iPhone to iCloud:

    • On your iPhone, go to Settings > iCloud > Storage > Manage Storage, then, if it is listed under Backups, tap your iPhone to see the date and size of backups.

If iPhone backups are available in iCloud (from the time when you want them), then:

    • On your iPhone, go to Settings > General > Reset, then tap “Erase all content and settings.”
    • In the Setup Assistant, proceed to “Set up your device,” tap Restore from a Backup, then sign in to iCloud.
    • Proceed to “Choose backup,” then choose from a list of available backups in iCloud.

You can then unpair your Apple Watch from your watch: Settings > General > Reset > Erase all Content and Settings. This will reset your Apple Watch to the factory settings. It can be paired again as normal when your iPhone is up and running.
