Aug 24, 2015 1:28 AM in response to marktemplinby lllaass,Audio out: The left audio port with a speaker icon is a 1/8" stereo minijack for audio line out. It can use analog audio and digital S/PDIF fibre optic cables. Audio devices you connect to the port will appear in System Preferences > Sound > Output. Note that this port does not support headsets or microphones.

Aug 24, 2015 1:33 AM in response to marktemplinby Roger Wilmut1,★HelpfulAlthough your Mac provides a digital optical output it does not appear to provide such an input. If you want to feed the digital output of your audio device to your Mac you will need to obtain a digital to USB converter. The Griffin iMic is an inexpensive device which will do this; there is a wide variety of such adaptors available though many are expensive.

Aug 24, 2015 8:35 AM in response to marktemplinby marktemplin,Roger's got the right answer. There is no digital audio input on the Mac Pro. Incredibly disappointing as this is, it's the truth and now I am a bit more miserable about upgrading my machine. Yet more added costs will be incurred just to connect one little core audio input; Significant costs I'd obviously rather avoid, especially having made an investment in high-end audio gear I expect to simply "plug-in" to a "high end" computer.
I'll agree with the Google groups threads here, too: Apple should have spend the few dollars required to put modern audio interfaces on the panel or engineer an interface converter for Thunderbolt as a common bridge. Who cares about 4K video when I can't even get sound by itself? Apple won't be the multimedia leader for long with this attitude.
Thanks again for the advice, fellow community members!

Aug 24, 2015 8:53 AM in response to marktemplinby Roger Wilmut1,I can't advise on current interfaces - I'm using an Edirol UA3-FX which has been out of production for years. Oddly enough the best place to ask about this is in the GarageBand forum. There are people who hang out there who use this sort of thing and can make suggestions.
