Q: My iPod nano (circa 2006) quit syncing after I updated to the current itunes.

My iPod nano (circa 2006) quit syncing after I updated to the current itunes. Messages are: "iPod cannot be synced. required file cannot be found", "the iPod Kim'siPod cannot be synced because it cannot be found". However it shows up when I open iTunes. I've tried solutions I found on this site but they don't work. I have a PC using Windows 7.

    Howdy there klmpe,

it sound like you are unable to sync your iPod Nano to your library because of these error messages you are getting. First I would use the troubleshooting in the following article that mentions the error about a file not being found:

    iTunes: Unable to sync photos

    • This error appears: "The iPhone/iPod touch '[device name]' cannot be synced. The required file cannot be found."

This article outlines steps to resolve these issues.

If you encounter any of the above issues or another issue while syncing photos, try the following:

    1. Ensure that you are syncing the device with the computer with which you normally sync photos.
    2. Within iTunes, select the device, then select the Photos pane and turn off Photo syncing.
    3. Sync your device.
Important: This will remove all synced photos from your device.
    4. Disconnect your device and update to the latest version of iTunes.
    5. Remove your iPod photo cache.
    6. Connect your device to iTunes.
    7. Select the device, then select the Photos pane and turn on Photo syncing.
    8. Sync your device.

If you still see an alert that there is not enough space to sync your entire photo library, selectively add photo albums until the device is full.

    ...

On Windows, these file formats will sync to your device: JPG , JPEG, BMP, GIF, TIF, TIFF, SGI, and PNG.

If that does not resolve the issue, then I would next restore the device with iTunes, and then sync your content back to it:

Use iTunes to restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings

    Sterling:

I am trying to sync music, not photos.....my iPod does not have photo capabilities. It's strictly for music.

Sounds like you have one of the first models if you can't sync photos so in that case I would proceed with the restore. That should allow you to sync your music back to it and get you going again.

So the solution was simple....I used an apple USB cable rather than a generic one and my iPod synced. That's all it took. Weird.
