Q: Upgrade to Yosemite from 10.6.8

I have a mid 2007 i-Mac with 4 gig of memory. I am wondering again if I should upgrade to a newer os perhaps Yosemite, if possible. I looked at this several months ago and was advised not to upgrade but now since we have upgraded our iphones we want to look at upgrading. I have a Time Machine backup on everything. I am concerned about the following apps:

- I -Works 8 Numbers and Keynote ........ Will they work with a new os like Yosemite or is an upgrade required?

- I -Works 9 Pages ........ Will it work with a new os like Yosemite or is an upgrade required?

- i-Photo 9 version 8.1.2 (424) .... where do I get a new version of i-Photo 11?, Should I upgrade i-Photo before upgrading my os?

- Is there anything else I should do before attempting the upgrade?

I understand the incompatibility of my other apps particularly Quicken 2007. Since 10.6.8 is not supported I am also concerned about security.

Thanks for your help.

iMac, Current os = 10.6.8

If you want to upgrade to Yosemite, the guidance on how to upgrade is:http://www.apple.com/osx/how-to-upgrade/

There will be apps that are not compatible since Apple stopped the Rosetta license after 10.6.8, so none of the legacy software will run.  Things like Office lower than 2011 will have to be upgraded, also.

The security updates that were released with the recent 10.10.5 release are significant - things that are very important if you are doing a lot of internet access.

Now the good news is that I was able to upgrade from 10.6.8 to Yosemite from my mid 2007 i-mac without ANY problems!

I had no hang ups and was done in about 4 hours. I was really worried about photo transfer but all of my 8000+ photo's transfered to Photo's ok and my music (3000 mp3's) did ok. I didn't do anything exceptional before except I did make prodigous backups and rebuilt my desk top with Disk Warrior and turned off my File Vault. I had 4 gig of memory and about 150 GB of disk space left.

I think I had been overly scared by the poor reviews of Yosemite. I've been eager to do this for two years. Yeah it's done! Also haven't noticed any slow down either.

Thanks to Everyone for their Advise!
