Q: How to break into an encrypted hard drive?

I encrypted my external hard drive with a password a long time ago and now I forget the password, the hard drive has my high school work that I would like to recover. I was able to find a way to completely erase the hard drive but that isn’t what I'm looking for. Is there a way to be able to get into the hard drive? perhaps a program that will attempt every possible combination until it breaks in? since the hard drive does not have a limit to how many attempts I shall attempt. Your suggestions would be very helpful and I'm sure I'm not the only one who have encountered this issue.

If it were possible for a readily available app to break the password in a moderate amount of time then there wouldn't be any point in encrypting it in the first place.

You will not live long enough to try "every possible combo"

Give it up, you encrypted the drive to keep it safe, it's very safe now, no-one can open it.

I have a hard time figuring out why somebody in high school would need to encrypt an entire hard drive (maybe "coolness" factor?)  I usually think of that sort of thing for people who work in hospitals or credit card companies.  I have a few files such as my passwords file encrypted but if somebody wants to hack into my computer and steal my notes to my cat sitter about feeding schedules and litter box cleanup they are welcome to them.

I would certainly appreciate the litter box cleanup notes, I have explained my method to my cat several times, he does not seem to understand.
