Q: RAW format images not importing from Nikon DSLR

My camera has two slots for SD cards.  In slot 1 I save RAW images, slot 2 I use for JPEGs.  When I uploaded images the RAW files were ignored, so only JPEGs were uploaded..... which means I can't process the RAW files in Photos.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Have you tried downloading the RAW files from the memory card to a folder on the Desktop and import from there?

Have you been able to import those RAW files before?  What camera model is it? Did this start with your migrating to the Photos application?

I've been able to download RAW before, but not recently.  The camera is a Nikon D7100.

I did think about plugging the SD card into a reader.  I don't want to go that way because I think Photos has "seen"  RAW before, and because of the phaffing about that would require.  Thinking about it, Photos might only have seen RAW photos that were already in the library that I imported from iPhotos when Photos was installed.  It would seem a backward step to prevent, or make it difficult to import RAW with Photos.

If you try to import a file that is alerted in the Photos library you'll get this message:

    Pdupimport.jpg

Anyway you can sort the files on the card via the Finder by date and just pic the newest to import.

Hi Old Toad.  I'm not sure how this helps with the automatic import of RAW files.  I can use an SD reader, but I feel that, somehow, I should be able to do it by direct cable between camera and Mac.  I can't see any software settings that relate to this.  And if I was using the no. 1 card slot for JPEG then I'd think the Mac would only read from slot 1.  Hmmm.

It's a test to see if the RAW files will import at all.

Personally, when I was using my digital camera with memory cards I would always use a card reader to upload the files to the Desktop first and then into the library.  This gave me the assurance that the files are safely on the hard drive before trying to import.  It also gave me a chance to rename the files with a file renaming app to the EXIF date taken and a brief description of the shoot like this:\

    Finder001.jpg

It made identification of the files later on so much easier regardless of the management system I used.

Also shooting in RAW+JPG (be it Canon), I had to change my workflow. In the past, iPhoto could distinguish and gave me the opportunity to upload only the JPGs (for quick browsing and selecting - never for serious postprocessing); Photos does not make this distinction, uploads both formats and displays the JPGs. So now I use Adobe Bridge/Get Photos from Camera to upload both formats to an external HD. Then I split them into two folders and will only import the JPGs into Photos.
