Does the Apple Image Capture app recognize the scanner?
Does Lexmark have any scan software for 10.10?
See if it is supported by VueScan software;
http://www.hamrick.com/

Some scanners (or scanner portions of printer/scanners) are just not supported for a Mac.

It does appear to recognise the scanner as it starts to scan but then cancels the operation. I am very dubious of using 3rd party software !! but thanks for the tip.

Try Image Capture again.
Note the time of the next cancel. After rebooting open the Console app in Finder>Applications>Utilities and look for log entries at the time of the cancel. Post suspicious ones here.

Does the scanner work on another computer?

Try the VeuScan software. there is a free trial.

Thanks for your Ideas. I found that Lexmark have a separate driver for the Scanner element of the all in one device. While its a little behind the current version of Yosimite it does work via the image capture application with some limitations.
