Q: Safari DNS problem in Yosemite? Works, then slow death...

Safari 8.0 + Yosemite seems to have a problem. It will work for a while, then begins to fail to load and is unable to resolve top level domains -  "Safari Can't Find the Server ... [e.g. apple.com]"

Restarting Safari often resolves the issue for a while (minutes, hours?), then performance deteriorates until it finally gives up and generates the error. Chrome, on the same machine, does not suffer this problem.

17" Intel iMac, Safari 8.0, Yosemite, Exede broadband (satellite).

Anybody else see this issue and/or have a solution?

OS X 10.10.4 is out today, everyone. I've installed it and am trying to undo all the fixes I applied via this thread to see if the old mDNSresponder still has the chops.

OK I've removed the (hopefully) redundant lauchd script that would reload discoveryd prefs and flush the cache.

I'm going out on a limb here but I think that 10.10.4 would use the legacy Mavericks method of flushing the DNS cache now?

Reset the DNS cache in OS X - Apple Support

    sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder

    Hooray!!!

Since os 10.10.4 Safari showed no problems anymore.

It has become very fast and freezes no longer.

Should have happened many months ago.

In any case, Apple, thanks after all,

I was going along fine yesterday, then today I tried to get to paypal.com and Safari said "Safari Cannot Find the Server".

I ended up just using the IP address from below to get there.  Ugh...

    PING paypal.com (66.211.169.66): 56 data bytes

    Request timeout for icmp_seq 0

    Request timeout for icmp_seq 1

    Request timeout for icmp_seq 2

    Request timeout for icmp_seq 3

    Request timeout for icmp_seq 4

I'm still experiencing browser issues with the new Yosemite update - Chrome, Safari, Firefox - trying and failing to find a secure connection. Restart works for about an hour or so and then problem recurs. Anyone else?

I'm still having all of the same issues after the update. I had to reapply the "fix" and still having some issues on Facebook.

Yes, we've tried 10.10.4 update as well and can report that we still have recurring internet connectivity issues. Mine hung just this morning. Rebooted and I'm back to work, but who knows for how long? Anyone finding a solution to this or getting any feedback from Apple?

Sorry, I have to repeal my message of July 1st.

Safari is still as crappy as before!

    Shame on you Apple!!!

Regarding Safari freezes, I noticed the following:

    1. When switching off WiFi for 10 seconds and switching back on again, Safari works again (for as long as it lasts)

    2. I purchased a USB wifi modem and connected it directly to the USB connector of of my MacBook Pro. Doing so I have for several days now NO freezing Safari any more.

Possibly this could be an additional input for Apple to investigate this issue. I bought the USB Wifi via AliExpress.com!!!

    lance5684,

I have the same problems too.

Honestly, for me 10.10.4 did not improve things by a single iota.

However, I just found (in this thread) some advice to specify opendns in the DNS network options:

    https://www.opendns.com/home-internet-security/opendns-ip-addresses/

Essentially, I just pasted the following IPs in the "DNS" tab of the Advanced network settings pannel:

    • 208.67.222.222
    • 208.67.220.220

It now *seems* to work again. Hope it keeps working, I am really tired of the recurring network problems on Macs.

Hi all, I'm posting here in case this can help others. My wife's 2015 MacBook Pro was experiencing this problem (no internet access for Safari or Apple apps but Chrome works fine) on our home wifi. I tried as many different solutions as I could from on here but the problem persisted, even after upgrading to 10.10.4. Two other Macs on the same network experience no such problems.

Eventually the IT team at my wife's work were able to fix this. I asked them what they did and this was their response:

"We manage proxy settings from server so that when staff come to school, it will apply the settings and able to access internet. it's working fine with the  version older than 10.10. But with Yosemite, the settings save in Safari Preferences instead of Network settings therefore it's not working at home even we try to create new location and clear all proxy settings.

I remove the settings from server and manually set it to each laptop as I still cant work out how to manage it from server."

I'm not an expert on this but this information might help someone else solve what is a very annoying problem.

    Kind regards,

    Scott

Having bounced along with 10.10.4 rebooting every day after renaming the 'System Configuration' folder I eagerly updated to 10.10.5 last night in the hope that Apple had sorted it out - my verdict: what a shocker, it's even worse tham 10.10.4 for dns. I lost a whole morning renmaing and rebooting. Hopeless.

My advice to anybody reading this is don't do the upgrade, it's hopeless.

El Capitan installed yesterday and everything is much faster with no DNS delay.  No problems experienced so far
