Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
If you want to transfer the voicemails from your iPhone to a new iPhone, the following article should be of assistance to you.

Aug 26, 2015 6:40 PM in response to jeffd55by pain in the,Sorry Jeffd55. Bad advice. I've visited that Apple Support page, and if you read it, nowhere in that information does it explain how to preserve voicemails.
Since I wrote my original question I have learned that it can't be done – preserving and transferring conventional voicemails from one iPhone to another. What can be done is to off-load, and thereby preserve, the voicemail files to a Mac (or PC).
I've discovered an app is called iExplorer by Macroplant <https://www.macroplant.com/store/> "Demo mode" is convincing, and after one registers and pays $35 one can off-load voicemails selectively or all the voicemails stored on a given iPhone to a Mac. It works well and there was no translation or degradation of the audio files during the off-load.
Thanks anyway.
