Aug 27, 2015 9:11 AM in response to brucebantamby lescornwell,Thanks for explaining, Bruce, and now I understand your problem.
Not entirely sure what the minimum version of your OS should be vs iPhoto, and I hope someone stops by who knows the exact details, but you may be right.
I do know that the switch (iPhoto becoming incompatible) occurs between 10.10.2 and 10.10.3, because that's exactly where (or when) Photos is introduced.
So, I can imagine that you will have to go from Mavericks to Yosemite (10.10.1 or 10.10.2) and then do the upgrade.
Make sure you've got a perfect clone, would be my first advice.

Aug 27, 2015 9:11 AM in response to brucebantamby LarryHN,That is the problem with ThreadJacking - you confuse yourself and everyone else - this thread is about installing iphoto on Yosemite and the answers relate to the question - when you improperly introduce a totally different question about installing iPhoto on Mavericks into the thread no one understands - you must have Yosemite to install iphoto 9.6.1 and if you have Yosemite the you can install 9.6.1
In the future please start new threads for new questions -- Writing an effective Apple Support Communities question

Aug 27, 2015 9:44 AM in response to LarryHNby brucebantam,Sorry LarryHN. I appear to have ruffled your feathers unintentionally. I was unaware I had "threadjacked". I came across the page with a search on the official Apple Support page. It took me directly to the page with the information I was after. I didn't realise I had done anything illegal or bad. I was just trying to get some help, that's all.
We can't all be as wise and well informed, or experienced as you good sir, so many thanks for putting me right! I will take more care in future.
Many thanks for the information. I will install Yosemite, and then update iPhoto to 9.6.1 afterwards.
Cheers
Bruce

Aug 27, 2015 10:49 AM in response to lescornwellby brucebantam,That's a new one on me Les! Must be something popular in the USA? I'm in the UK. Evidently it was released in 1987 (I Googled it), so I am certainly old enough! There's a nice link here for anybody as puzzled as I was!

Aug 27, 2015 11:29 AM in response to Csound1by freddiemerion,To Everyone who has wanted to obtain iPhoto 9.6.1 for their Yosemite-equipped iMac:
After much trial and many tribulations, including asking the Apple Support Community for help, I was finally able to download iPhoto 9.6.1 and it actually works fine in every way. None of the suggestions from Apple Support Community worked. Finally, I called Apple Support Group who switched me to the sub-group that deals with Photos and iPhoto who gave me the straight story. Here's how.
I went to my Applications list and moved my original iPhoto application to Trash. I then restarted my computer. I then went to my Applications again, and there (to my surprise) was iPhoto. I clicked on iPhoto and a window opened that said that in order to use the latest version of iPhoto, I had to "Upgrade" my photo library. The Apple Support guy said to do so. I clicked on Upgrade, and the process proceeded, after which iPhoto appeared in my Dock. Magic! Photos is still there, but makes no difference. I clicked on the iPhoto icon in the Dock and it opened as usual and performs normally in all respects. This is in fact iPhoto 9.6.1.
Apple tells me there won't be any more upgrades to iPhoto in the future, but the present version works just fine for me, so I don't care.
