Q: Can't insert Special Characters/Emoji/Symbols to any document

Since I updated to OSX Yosemite I can no longer insert Special Characters (now called "Emoji and Symbols") to any document: Word, Text Edit, Pages, Keynote etc. Double clicking the symbol doesn't do anything, drag and drop doesn't work and neither does copy and paste. Are there some settings I need to change?

Thanks

MacBook, OS X Yosemite (10.10.2)

It works for me in Yosemite in everything, and does so with a single click—thankfully; try single clicking. Under some circumstances (not sure which) it will insert and then the utility will vanish. Here's some examples using this Safari:        ▼⎂♸✔️⬅️

If you want it to stick around, click on the tiny box at its furthest upper right (it has a classic Command-symbol ⌘ in that box) and you'll get the whole thing essentially the same as the old style special characters entry.‱   <— These were done with this expanded entry-box, and even required the classic double-click.

If none of that works, then re-start your machine or... (insert favourite facile but useless advice here —>) __________ .

Strange to say, the emoji were inserted, but on saving the comment, disappeared. So some symbols may indeed not be displaying; they aren't for me.

I have exactly the same problem. I have tried rebooting, but nothing works for me. I am using an iMac with Yosemite, my wife has a macbook air and she has the same problem too. I can't believe we are isolated cases, has anyone found a workaround yet?

I have the same problem and I want to pull my hair out. Clicking on Emoji & Symols opens the Characters window, but then... nothing. I cannot get them from there into Keynote no matter what I try. Ridiculous, buggy, MS-grade software. Argh.

Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

Or you can use your Apple ID to register with this site and go the Apple BugReporter. Supposedly you will get an answer if you submit feedback.

WE got our Mac Pro from a Best Buy and they included Webroot in the purchase. We had this problem too BUT removing Webroot fixed it!

I found the secret answer! From any text field, press the Command, Control, & Space keys at the same time and the Emoji selector will magically appear :-) Thanks so much to these people for this info…

That's good, but nobody in this discussion had any trouble getting it to "appear":    Their problem was that after it appeared they could not get the symbols input into an app via the normal ways -- double clicking or drag drop or copy/paste.  Hopefully that is all working correctly for you.

Actually, I couldn’t get it to work by the traditional method, either, i.e. select Emoji & Symbols from the Finder menu, then copy & paste or drag & drop the symbol you want. I found this discussion while I was googling around for a solution. I think you will find that if you don’t choose Emoji & Symbols from the Finder menu, but instead position the cursor in any text field and press Command-Control-Space, the Emoji selector will pop up and you can double click on a symbol to insert it. Sorry I forgot to mention the double click part.

How about if you Choose Emoji & Symbols from the Edit menu of the App you are working in?  Doesn't that work OK?

This response is the modern-day equivalent to calling up a store in the pre-internet days, asking if they could provide you with the goods or services you wanted or needed in a timely manner, being told "No," and then being told the following by the same brain surgeon who against all odds had somehow managed to figure out how to answer the phone and then speak English in a complete sentence:

"You could try looking in the Yellow Pages."

This is a really frustrating bug. I too have no problem getting emoji to appear; but clicking, double clicking, pasting or whatever will not insert them in a doc, or anything else. You mentioned. Abeshoner mentioned removing Webroot. Can you, or someone else, elaborate?

(I made an account just to answer this) I figured it out! For those who have Webroot, click on the little icon on your menu bar (very top-right of your screen) and there should be an option that says "Pause Secure Keyboard Entry." Click on that and make sure there's a check mark next to it. Then you should be able to paste an emoji with a single click! I guess Webroot doesn't allow emojis?

I have found that Insert / Symbol / Advanced Symbols allows you to insert most common symbols that you might want to insert in everday Word documents - granted, not a perfect solution or as robust option-wise as Symbol Browser, but better than nothing.
