I'm trying to open AVI video files on my iMac 27 OS X Lion 10.7.5 and need some direction on what to do. Do I need to install a new format? I receive and install all  suggested system updates on a regular basis and my system reports, all is up to date.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.5), Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5

You most likely need to install VLC, but it's possible that no Mac OS X software can open those AVIs. AVI is a container, not a format.

    Thank you Niel!

I put the micro SD card in an SD adaptor & into my iMac. Usually my SD cards with hundreds of hi-res photos & videos open iPhoto by defaul. This sub-standard infrared night vision camera I just bought & used, didn't open iPhoto, so I used Finder and right clicked on the devic. The DCVD folder opened the 4 photos but not the 6 short videos.

I havent used anything but Apple device, but recently went to the dark side and bought an hp lapto. I don't even remember how to navigate, so I hardly ever touch it. Do you think I'd have more options with the AVI vids using it instea? I know, it's scary!

    Thanks in advance!
