Q: Problem connecting on video chat AIM account/Messages

I've recently upgraded to a new iMac (27" Retina, 3.5ghz i5). I'm running Yosemite 10.10.3.

After years of successful and problem-free video chatting with family using an AIM account with Messages (and iChat before that), I'm suddenly having connection issues.

Curiously, I'm able to connect on my first attempt of the day. The video and audio work wonderfully, the chat can go on as long as desired, etc.

With every subsequent attempt to connect, the video chat will *not* connect.

I've deleted and re-added my aim account multiple times. Clearly my router is allowing the video chatting since a) I never had a problem in 8+ years previously with several different macs and b) I am even able to connect on this Mac, albeit intermittently.

I would welcome any advice.

iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2014), OS X Yosemite (10.10.3)

Is it safe to assume there is no fix on our end to this issue?  Having the exact same issue with the same error's.  So frustrating trying to run a small business on my Mac when you can't send files, screen share or video chat.  Maybe snail mail?

    Hi,

Despite bringing this to the attention of the Hosts and being told it has been "passed on" there is no news from them (Normal) or any post to say people have found it to be working again.

The issues seems to be with the SNATMAP server for Internet connections on both AIM and Jabber accounts.

I am of course very disappointed with apple. Been a loyal apple users since they came into existence, I have over 10 macs in my network for my small business, (just purchased another one a few weeks ago) and this is the first time I am ****** off this bad with them. We use and relied on messages for 4 way calling and remote login / file transfer, used it from the inception of ichat.

Built our network and purchased macs mainly because of the ease of communication via messages.

Invested over 40 hours working with your level 2's on this issue, sent feedback to your engineers,

APPLE GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER  - Are you hearing us ?..... feedback would be appreciated, we are waiting and hoping for a fix, I don't want alternatives, it has worked well for years, all my staff is trained with mac and messages. Surely this can't be that big of a problem, if it is, at least let us know.

FaceTime for now but it ***** compared to the ability of messages, we have been down long enough!

Out of curiosity - does everyone who's experiencing these problems have Comcast?  I just want to double check if it's an issue in the Airport Utility or Comcast's end where I would need to make any changes or updates

Hi Erik, I have Cablevision here in CT, my brother in Indy uses Roadrunner, other friend on West coast uses something else so I think it's a safe bet that Comcast is not at fault

Thanks for the response - just wanted to make sure   I'm trying everything I can think of but still not working.  I also tried turning firewall on and adding Messages to my firewall list but that didn't work either.  So far I've tried creating AOL accounts and connecting (thinking maybe AOL's connection would work vs AIM), tried playing around with the Server Settings in Messages Account settings, limiting bandwidth to 500 kbps, installing a new OS, tried using wifi vs ethernet via my AirPort Extreme as well as my phone as a wireless modem... nothing seems to work.  I know it's been mentioned it's gotta be on Apple's side but just wanted try everything I could think of on my end as well.

I hear you Erik, I've never been more aggravated by a software problem in my entire life!! even Microsoft never let their customer base swing in the breeze while volunteer were left to sort out the problems!

Totally agree!  It's ridiculous!  I love Apple products but this is really leaving a sour taste!!  I can't believe they are letting it go this long without responding that they at least acknowledge people are experiencing problems.  I'm thinking my next step is scheduling an appointment with the Genius Bar and bringing my laptop into the Apple store and see if they can figure it out or at least send notification of what's going on... don't know if it'll help at all but we'll see I guess.  I'll keep you posted if by some miracle they figure it out.

Very Good, but I do believe that the explanation our good friend and learned colleague Ralph from the United Kingdom has put forth makes a great deal of sense. As to why Apple won't proffer anything is another matter entirely but please do let us know what happens!!

Totally agree - I know Ralph is very knowledgable and totally makes sense to me.  I'm just hoping that at the very least, the techs at the Apple store will pass this along and hopefully get it resolved on their end.  Since they aren't responding to the forums, I'll show them that others are experiencing the same issues - hopefully they'll make note and get on the ball and resolve this.

    Hi,

    Apple never comment here.

Hosts (Moderators) sometimes do but normally on the policy of the Community/Boards and the like and are more likely to be seen doing so in the  Using Apple Support Communities area.

The info (what there is) about SNATMAP is in note 6 at the bottom here Using iChat with a firewall or NAT router - Apple Support

The SNATMAP server has never featured on the Status page.

This is the page that the Feedback page points to for Messages http://www.apple.com/feedback/ichat.html

It has never been renamed to reflect iChat and Messages or had the version drop downs updated  (they do not get to version 6 in Lion)

However it is the place to use.  Put everything that should be in the lower drop downs in the free text area.

I have linked Rick7777777's post to the thread I have going in the Hosts area (They say the original info has been passed on)

There is never any feedback on this from Apple.

Sometimes the engineers will contact some people to run tests  (the last time that was done for iChat was at the iChat 3 release the result was the standalone iChat 3.1 update and that is basically 10 years ago).

Erik, I did try the genius bar in Ottawa Canada, they had no idea there was a problem, spoke with at least 4 staff, 3 of them did not know you could use messages for video conferencing. One of the staff new the messages app well, but could offer no solutions, we have worked with levels 2's for months who tell us they have been forwarding  our testing to the engineers , We speak weekly to a specific level 2 who still has nothing to report.

    Good luck though!

Thanks for the heads-up.  It looks like I'm now in the same boat lol.  I ended up speaking to someone at level 2 again as well but this time, he did a screen share with me (other people I spoke to in the past didn't do this).  He was pretty helpful and seemed like he wanted to try and figure it out (was on the phone for probably a good 3 hours trying everything we could think of) but, as it sounds like everyone else knows and what Ralph pointed out - not really something able to fix on our end.  I know everyone knows this but I figured, if nothing else, another person reporting the same issues so hopefully they'll get it figured out.  He also forwarded all our testings and error messages to their engineers.  I'll post if I hear anything back.

    Hi,

You're welcome, for what it seems to be worth at the moment.

This does seems like one of the longest issues that I have known about that has not been fixed.
