Q: To Loner T... We were talking earlier about me getting Windows on my Mac Yosemite (2009)...

Hey Loner T,

Our conversation apparently timed out earlier & I wasn't allowed to post any more...  I hope you can still help me...I'm SO CLOSE to completing this ongoing nightmare of a task!!  As of right now, I've cleared out my "trash" and I still only have 36.82 GB of free space on my start up disc.  You suggested I allocate at least 100 GB to Windows when I partition (which is the step I am at...)  Is there a way I can use another HD (an external one) to install Windows on?  Or does it HAVE to be my internal HD/start up disc??

iMac, OS X Yosemite (10.10.5)

For partitioning to work properly, the disk should have minimal fragmentation. Large deletions (like your Movies) can cause problems and fragment disk space. You have several options. The following is the simplest.

    1. Back up OSX using Time Machine - Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac - Apple Support.

    2. Boot into Internet Recovery - OS X: About OS X Recovery - Apple Support.

    3. Erase your internal drive and restore from the TM backup in Step 1 - OS X Yosemite: Recover your entire system.

Please be aware that TM does not backup Bootcamp partitions.

Create two separate backups, if you have two separate disks available and handy.

Ok, I've backed up my computer using Time Machine.  Here are my next questions...

    1.  As far as the next step, "OS X Recovery", I did that a couple days ago when my Boot Camp Assistant originally failed.  Should I do that again?  The entire OS X Recovery?  Or will that cause more problems...?

    2.  And as far as erasing my internal drive...you mean copying all files from Macintosh HD to an external drive and then erasing everything from the Mac HD??

    3.  Why do you say create 2 separate backups?  That's going to take a ton of space on my external HD's...  I'm not sure I have 2 external HD's with that much space...?

    Look forward to hearing back!!

    Jess

The issue you had with unable to partition requires Item #1. This will result in a contiguous disk space which will facilitate partitioning. The previous backup did not create a contiguous disk because Movies was still there. Boot in Internet Recovery (you will boot from Apple servers). If you erase the internal drive and restore, the restore will use contiguous disk space. The two backups are for safety. One is necessary, two is extra safety. Create at least one backup.

Ok, so since I've backed up in TM I should now:

    1.  Boot in to Internet Recovery using OS X Recovery,

    and THEN

    2.  Copy all files from my Mac HD to an external HD (or preferably 2 external HD's), and then erase my entire internal HD and restore from the TM backup using "OS X Yosemite: Recover your entire system"

    In that order...??

If your TM backup was done just now, the copy in 2 is optional, but recommended. You do not need to copy any OS files, just copy your personal files for safety.

Ok, I'm going to do the OS X Recovery now.  Then I'll be back!

Ok, so this is going to be a dumb question...(like I haven't asked a million dumb questions so far, haha)... How do I know if the files are OS or personal?

Any files under Macintosh HD -> Users -> Your Name is personal data.

Ohhhh, that makes sense.  Ok, I'll save all of those and leave the rest alone.  Ok, about to do the OS X Recovery for real...then I'll be back!

OK I'm at the OS X Utilities menu.  Should I:

    - Restore from Time Machine Backup

    - Reinstall OS X

    - Get help online

    - Disk Utility

    1. Disk Utility -> Erase the full disk.

    2. Quit DU.

    3. Restore from Time Machine Backup.

    4. Boot into OSX after restore, and run BCA.

Well crap, I didn't back up my personal files to an external HD yet.  I guess I need to do that first, THEN restart my computer again & follow these steps...

Ok, so I restarted my computer so I could copy all of my "user" files to an external HD.  They are currently copying (assuming my external HD has enough room).  But the status bar is saying "about a day" (to take it to copy them all), and counting...  Can I do anything while these files are all copying??  That's 24 hours!  Or do I need to wait the entire 24+ hours to proceed...???

What does the estimated time for copying show - 24 hours makes no sense? Are all your Movies included? What is the total size in GB that it is showing to be copied?
