Q: 8.4.1 iOS Update battery draining quickly & overheating

Hi, I've recently noticed with this new update that my battery is draining very quickly with little or no use. It started when I came home from work my iPhone was on 1% and as a nurse, I barely get time to have a break so I don't use my phone whilst I'm at work. I also ensure that I shut down all of the apps that I use before I click the lock screen button. This was when I had the 8.3.1 iOS update.

The next day the exact same thing happened. Around 5pm my iPhone blanked out with barely any use. Then I had a notification that the new iOS update (8.4.1) , so I updated it. Honestly I wished I didn't because its just made the whole situation 10 x worse. When my iPhone is in charge or on the table I find that it is overheating quite a lot.

Now in the morning my battery was 1% with barely any use. In the night my phone is at my bedside table, all of the open apps i've closed. In the night I don't use my phone at all and I dont set an alarm and yet this problem still occurs.

Is anyone else experiencing this problem? If so, please reply

Yes, turning off wifi seemed to work and the battery went back to somewhat normal useage overnight. BUT does that mean I have use cellular data only until a update is released? Ouch.

Surely this is just another example of the longest running, worst kept secret out there? The degredation of both battery life and speed of your phone is a deliberate act by Apple in order to "persuade" you that it's time to upgrade. New firmware releases are nothing short of malware.

After resetting network settings (Settings/General/Reset/Reset Network Settings) and after all of my iCloud photos had updated, my phone is now operating as it used to.

resetting your network settings reboots the phone and deletes all of your wifi passwords, so write them down before doing this.

My battery is now back to normal and not overheating. Issue only lasted a day. After charging & resetting, it's held up just like before. Guess I was lucky. It still needs to upload some photos but only does that when wifi is available. I do notice that it drains faster when I have wifi access and the photos are uploading.

It seems my iPhone 5S is back to normal. Haven't noticed anything annoying problems any more. And funny thing is I didn't do nothing. I just let it be, and it seems like everything fixed by itself.

I too am having this issue. I am by no means a heavy phone user and prior the latest updated I could go 12 hours without having to recharge. Now I am barely making it 4 hours. Not to mention my phone is getting extremely hot which seems like a potential hazard. Hopefully they get an update out soon to rectify this.

I have the same issue. iPhone 6 overheats quickly and battery draining while using it. If not using, the battery seems to be ok. But whats the point of not using my phone??? Needed to be fixed immediately! after reading this post I sure know it's not just my phone and it's a real issue. I don't wanna reset to factory defaults or disable anything so that my phone would work. I want it to work like before, like few days ago, when it was working fine. That's how it should be, or do not release any updates before they have been thoroughly checked.

I did few experiments and I finally managed to narrow it down,in my case I found out it's my apple music that making the battery drain and overheating, not the wifi or the itunes&apps sign in as I previously thought.so I sign out from apple music in my setting-music,and everything back to normal, the phone cooled off and the battery back to normal, but i lost all the subscribed songs from apple music.so apple definitely need to fix this problem as soon as possible if they don't wanna lose their apple music subscribers.

Going back to factory settings resolved my battery life, podcast app and app updates problems (iPhone 5s).

I did the network's reset on my iPhone 5S and logout/login of App Store, and today my battery is on 69% after more than 3 hours of heavy usage. Before the reset, at 12:00 hrs the battery percentage were 20% or less. I never had iTunes Music On btw.

    Hi,

I have an iPhone 5/ 32GB.  My iPhone started acting really quirky and doing the same as you described.  In a perfect world I would only have iPhone problems! Vehicle wouldn't start on the way home, iPhone won't turn on and get's extremely hot then reboots itself.  I finally got home synced the iPhone, went through all the resets as described and still nothing.  I tried to restore, but the iPhone would not stay on long enough to restore from my MacBook.

Last resort for personal attempt to fix it, I followed these instructions and the problem went away:

    • Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button
    • Press and hold on the Home button
    • Keep holding both buttons until the display turns off and back on with Apple logo on it.

The iPhone appears to be working fine now. It's charging without rebooting from the MacBook and it is no longer over heating.

    Best wishes,

If all else fails say a little prayer and run through it again.  I was just about to throw mine into a wall, really frustrated.
