Q: Disk not ejected properly

Hi I'm having this issue since I upgraded to Mavericks where almost every time I put my computers to sleep I get the "Disk not ejected propoerly" message and every disk but the system one is not mounted and cannot be found by Disk Utility.

I have a Mac Mini late 2009 and a Macbook Pro 15 mid 2009 and I'm having this issue in both machines. Never had any issues before in any of my machines, not in Leopard, Snow Leopard or Lion.

On my Mini I have two external USB drives and on my MBP I have a SSD, where the system is installed, and a HD (I replaced my optical drive with a bay to install the extra disk).

I researched the issue and found a couple of threads where people sugested to buy a 3rd party app that would unmount the disks at sleep and remount them at wake, but I think this shouldn't be a issue, since it never happened with any version of OSX I had used before.

Is anybody else having this issue as well? Is there any word from Apple on this subject? Can I hope for a fix?

Thanks

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9)

Before I got the LaCie Little Big Disk (which doesn't have the DNE problem), I was having some success with Jettison, an app that automatically unmounts external drives before the computer is put to sleep, and remounts them when it wakes up.

Have any of you tried it? Would be curious to hear if it helps.

My 6TB LaCie 2big Thunderbolt , running as Time Machine in a Raid set, has the DNE problem, but it almost always reboots on computer / monitor startup.  As I said from the beginning of my use of the LaCie with a new iMac with Yosemite - this was a machine the Apple store pushed.  !!!

    @longtimeuser:

I run my LaCie 2Big TB2 in the same configuration.

The DNE problem never occurs when the drive is connected via USB3 to my iMac 5K. No DNE incident in month.

The DNE incident immediately shows up when drive is connected via TB.

Lacie drive was exchanged for a new one (incl. power supply), 3 different TB cables used (one orig. Apple), Yosemite clean reinstall on the iMac. All to no avail.

It is a OSX TB bug.

Wish this were true. I had DNE issues with LaCie Big drives with USB3.

    Solution and possible workaround

I've been following this thread. I have a new Macbook Pro 13" 2015 and have DNEP with my external hard drive enclosure(brand ORICO, two bays).

It happens intermittently..also wake up from sleep.

    Suspect Causes of the problem

I suspect it is caused by the USB3 port on certain models of Macbook and iMac. I have a Mac Mini, it is working fine with the external enclosure.

Major culprit could be the variation of power supply on those USB ports. (Some people blame the logic board, it make sense)

    Fix

Get an external USB3 hub with independent power supply.

I have a dell monitor U2414H, it has several USB ports on the monitor. The monitor has independent power supply to those USB ports. So I connect Macbook USB to monitor USB..Then all the devices are connected using monitor USB ports..

    Problem solved. NO DNEP afterwards.

    Also

I TICK the box in energy saving - Put hard drive to sleep when possible.

Why? Some hard drive could put to sleep themselves..It could have a power saving mechanism..When Macbook fall asleep, the device's self power saving kick in, Macbook then will lose the connection and think it is not ejected properly.

    Also use disk utility

Verify and fix every drive - because of the prior DNEP, might cause some damage to file tables..

Glad it's working for you but this is not limited to USB; it happens with Thunderbolt as well.

It has to be an OS X bug. That's the only thing that makes sense, because the DNE error seems to occur with all different hardware models, USB3, Thunderbolt, Thunderbolt 2.

This has become a huge issue for me, because although my LaCie Little Big Disk has worked flawlessly (it's the only external drive that hasn't given me DNE errors), it is 80% full and soon I will need another solution.

I'm considering just keeping my iMac powered on for the entire day, not allowing it to sleep until I go to bed. Then I could use Jettison or manually unmount and mount the external disk(s) once a day.

Not to sound coy, but have you tried what helped me (WD, Lacie, G / USB2/3, FW)?

Power reset and PRAM zap (Apple approved)

Not sure exactly what your solution is, but I've tried 4 different LaCie D2 drives: two were USB3, two were Thunderbolt 2. Both gave me DNE errors. I've tried connecting the drives directly to my iMac, to an OWC Thunderbolt hub, and to a powered USB hub. Doesn't seem to matter.

The problem as gone away for me. I have an iMac with an external Seagate drive connected via FW800. I stopped getting the error message when i deselected
"Put hard disks to sleep when possible" in the Energy Settings control panel. I still plan to troubleshoot and see if there's a way I can use this setting again, but at least I've stopped the error message from popping up every time my iMac sleeps.

I had the same problem with similar setups and settings.

The problem went away when I did both a Power reset and a PRAM reset, as described by Apple (also mentioned here).

My settings and setups needed no changing at all after that, and my disks may now happily sleep.

You may find info this on many sites when you google: apple power reset pram

This problem has been around for over two years and no response from Apple Inc!!!

I thought Microsoft were unresponsive but this takes the belt.

This problem reared its ugly head on my new iMac a couple of weeks ago and I have been trawling the web ever since for a cure.

It seems to me that Apple couldn't care less about our issues.

Is anyone running El Capitan beta, and still experiencing this problem? I keep hoping they will fix it in an OS X update. But so far that hasn't worked out.

I get this message every few days with a USB memory card.    Both Disk Utility and finder seem to see it fine though.   I don't know anything in particular that I'm doing to get this pop-up message.

Have you done the resetting the PRAM thing?  It worked for me this morning with Yosemite.  I have seen no signs of the message since, despite the machine restarting once (for an update) and going to sleep twice.

On my new iMac there is no PRAM, it is called NVRAM.

Now on 10.10.5 I did a NVRAM reset and than hooked my LaCie back on via Thunderbolt (instead of USB).

After first sleep: BANG! Disk not ejected properly :-(((((
