Q: Can't resize Macintosh HD partition

Hello,

 

I've installed Windows 8.1 via the BCA on my MacBook Pro and upgraded it to Windows 10. Now I wanted to perform a clean installation of Windows 10 via the BCA afterwards to get rid of the Windows 8.1 overload.

 

My first problem was that BCA did not recognize my Windows installation anymore (because of the upgrade). So I started in recovery mode to delete the three partition which belongs to Boot Camp (disk0s4, BOOTCAMP and disk0s6). There are still two problems:

 

1. My Macintosh HD only has 169 GB but I have a total space of 250 GB. I'm not able to resize my Macintosh HD partition (even in recovery mode).

2. If I hold ALT while booting, I still see Windows as a boot option. But I don't have any Windows partitions left on the system.

 

What should I do now? I want to remove Windows as a boot option and get back the full 250 GB for my Macintosh HD partition.

PS: If I type diskutil cs list in Terminal I only get one CoreStorage logical volume group named Macintosh HD.

    I want to see what is in your EFI volume. This has to be done from Terminal.

     

    sudo mkdir -p /Volumes/EFI

    sudo mount -t msdos /dev/disk0s1 /Volumes/EFI

    Since you have EFI mounted, go to Disk Utility, click on new image, and the source should be ./Volumes/EFI and the destination should be a filename in Documents folder or on your Desktop. Copy the backup to an external disk. Once copied, boot into Internet Recovery (with the spinning globe), mount disk0s1 again, remove the Microsoft tree (nothing else), and boot normally and test.

    But how do I do it? If I create a new image I can only select the destination where I want to save the image.

    Okay, I've created the image. But how to mount the image in Internet Recovery Mode? Terminal? Disk Utility? I'm sorry but I don't know.

    You do not need to mount this image. This is a backup.

     

    1. Boot into Internet Recovery - OS X: About OS X Recovery - Apple Support .

    2. Mount your EFI volume manually. Remove the Microsoft folder/directory and everything inside the folder. Please do not delete anything else.

    3. Run DU Repair on your internal disk. Once repaired, please try to boot into OS X and check if you still have remnants of Windows.

    I have some problems doing this.

     

    1. I've created the folder /Volumes/EFI again (mkdir -p /Volumes/EFI without sudo)

    2. I've mounted the volume (mount -t msdos /dev/disk0s1 /Volumes/EFI without sudo)

    3. I've started DU but there is no EFI.

     

    Where should I delete the folder/directory/volume? I'm a little bit confused.

    Please check the output of df -h or diskutil list to verify that EFI is mounted.

    Without sudo it is mounten (via df -h). With sudo it's not mounted, because Terminal does not know the command sudo. If I switch to DU there is only Macintosh HD and disk1 with OS X Base System.

    EFI is usually hidden. You can enable DU debug menu and see it. If df  shows the volume mounted, then you should be able to delete the Microsoft tree and test.

    Okay... I can now see the partition "EFI" and "Recovery HD". But how to delete the EFI one? If I click on the delete-tab I only have the option to format it with a specific format (FAT etc.).

    Your cannot and should not remove the EFI partition. If you do, it will corrupt your Mac OSX and Windows both.

     

    The goal is to remove only the Microsoft directory and all contents under it. Based on your listing of /Volumes/EFI/EFI directory,

     

    cd /Volumes/EFI/EFI

    rm -rf Microsoft

    Please be careful not to delete anything else.
