Q: stolen mac - Can I Get My Baby Back

Does apple screen serial numbers for the device to be operated by another user?  Can I report it and get my compy back?

    Apple does not screen for stolen device serial numbers.  If you have find my mac enabled you can see if it is online.  Then you take a screen shot of that map and report it to the police and they may be able to get you laptop back for you.  Here is Apple's article on the subject.  If your Mac is lost or stolen - Apple Support

    So sad.  Wish I'd backed up those photos!  Though many seem to still be in the stream on my phone.  Just the pre cloud older ones may be lost to me.

    Yes, it is a sad situation.  People steal these things thinking they can do something with them, but with Find My Mac they can't use it for anything but parts.  Did you have Find My Mac enabled?  I hope you had a time machine backup.  If you do you can recover your photos almost certainly.  Theft is just a small reason for a backup though most computer users never make a backup.
