Q: iDVD encoding failure after OS X update to 10.10.5

Hello,

I have updated my OS to 10.10.5 and now iDVD won't encode correctly, it is failing at the point of multiplexing. The error is:

Encoding Video

There was an error during movie encoding

I can load the project file over my home network into iDVD on my MacBook Pro running 10.10.4 and it work fine.

Any ideas or is this down to Apple to fix?

Tim

I've discovered that iDVD can't seem to encode a movie file with no audio.

If that's the case create a silent audio file and add it to the movie, scaling it (the audio track) to the length of the movie.  See if iDVD will encode that.

    Just completed that test!

I took one of my  4.5 minute Aperture slide shows that didn't have a music track and that iDVD / 10.10.5 would not encode.

Imported that to FCP X, added a music track, and turned the volume down to silent.

Exported that to 1280 x 720 30p and imported it to iDVD.  The screen capture here shows the result.  Burning successful.

Life is good!  I can now sleep.

I want to submit an iDVD problem report to Apple but can't seem to find a link - any help on that?

    Hello, Stumbleone,

I've just re-encoded and exported from Final Cut a silent bit of video on one of the iDVD projects that failed. I chose video & audio rather than just video and the encoding worked! This would appear to be one of the issues.

I'm going to try some of the other projects that have failed...

    Tim

    Tim -

Curious as to what other tests you may have run and what the results are.  Would be interested in hearing your experience.

The "add audio" workaround does it reliably for me.

I would encourage you to file a bug report below.   Yes, iDVD has been discontinued but it is still used by millions.   Your report will be helpful.

DId that indeed already.  iDVD is very important to me and I want to see it stay viable.

    Thank for the reminder.

You, me, and millions of others.  You see, there really are no alternatives to iDVD.  In our organization, we simply dedicated some computers to run Mavericks for our movie editing purposes.  Although, I have found Yosemite "workarounds" for iMovie HD 06 as well as iDVD.

Well, i tried exporting some of the failed projects as disc images rather than tS Folders or burning straight to DVD. Most worked doing it this way but large projects using dual layer disc tended to still fail...

    stumleone,

Thanks for the tip about iDVD's audio requirement!!

I was getting the same error as the op, Tim Dyson: "There was an error during movie encoding" - but I am using different software. Adding audio to my .m4v movie solved my problem, as well.

In my case, the 'movie' was a slideshow created in FotoMagico (v.4.6.3) and exported as .m4v using FotoMagico's 'DVD' preset. My iMac is running OS 10.8.5 and  iDVD 7.1.2.

I am adding my experience in case others get a hit on this thread (there are MANY less helpful suggestions out there).

Thanks for the help guys, I use iDVD every week so this has been a real lifesaver!

I created a blank audio file (AIFF) in Logic, added it to the iDVD project and it burned as normal

Really wish Apple would keep supporting iDVD and iWeb!

Thank you so much!  I would've never guessed that the burn errors were due to my video's lack of an audio track. What an odd quirk... Since the video I created did not need audio, I simply added an audio track with the volume turned  almost  all the way down, then iDVD burned the disc perfectly.

I want to thank you for this post.  After tearing my hair out and searching the far reaches of the Interwebs, your solution fixed my iDVD problem.  I am so glad you took the time to post this.  Thanks again!
