Q: back up ssd of can start laptop

I cannot start my laptop and want to back it up before giving it to apple service department .  So can I  remove thee SSD harddisok and connect to another Ssd and copy it

MacBook Pro with Retina display, Mac OS X (10.7.5)

    Yes, However make sure to reseat the original SSD as it could be the problem or one of the causes of your problem

    Since you need another computer as well as another storage device in order to copy from what was the internal, an easier solution is to boot into Recovery Mode or Internet Recovery. One of the options in Disk Utility should be Restore; select the internal boot partition as the source and the external as the destination and let it run. Be sure to partition the external with a GUID partition table and a Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format first.

     

    Using that approach also avoids the chance of any possible damage which might break AppleCare coverage, assuming you have it.
