Since you need another computer as well as another storage device in order to copy from what was the internal, an easier solution is to boot into Recovery Mode or Internet Recovery. One of the options in Disk Utility should be Restore; select the internal boot partition as the source and the external as the destination and let it run. Be sure to partition the external with a GUID partition table and a Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format first.
Using that approach also avoids the chance of any possible damage which might break AppleCare coverage, assuming you have it.
