Hello all,

I have a Macbook pro that I bought fall of 2014, I also had my first seagate external hard drive(1tb) set up early this year but I didnt have any issues back then. Now, my 1tb hard drive was stolen, so I have to get a 500gb wd passport for the mean time. While setting up my the new hard drive for time machineScreen Shot 2015-09-04 at 06.59.21.png

The initial backup to a new drive, if the previous one is not available, takes a very long time. USB-2 does not help. As long as it keeps making progress (the progress bar moves, however slowly) it will be fine.

You next backup will go very quickly by comparison.

Thank you grant for the response. that's what i thought last night but this AM someone disconnected it from my laptop(my dad, smh) and when i inserted it immediately this morning. As we speak, the progress bar hasn't change. but hard drive light is still blinking.
