Q: I moved my iTunes folders to an external and now i've lost my playlists

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

 

I've had to move my iTunes folders to an external to save the hard drive on my mac.  It was working fine until the disc was accidentally ejected and now my play lists are gone. 

 

Is there a way to recover my playlists?  Is there a way to do this without putting the music back on the mac and for it to play from the external?

A:

Start iTunes while holding down the option/alt key.  When prompted select the iTunes Library.itl file in the iTunes folder on the external.  Should you forget to turn on the external drive before starting iTunes in the future you may need to repeat this.

 

Post by thanos206 with tip on using iTunes on external drives - https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3282856 - "Create an alias of iTunes and place it on the network drive. Then drag that alias to the dock so when iTunes launches the drive has to mount if it is not already."
