Q: "Add Image to Photos" in Safari not working. Any thought why? OS X (10.3.3)

Hey team, when I bring up the contextual menu in Safari and select "Add Image to Photos" nothing happens. Is it supposed to behave in the same way iPhoto did? Any thoughts welcomed and encouraged, thanks!

    • I deleted the contents of com.apple.Photos and, for good measure, I also deleted the contents of com.apple.iPhoto. Retested and got the same result.
    • I created a new admin user. Logged as that new user and tested the procedure and it worked as it should. This was even using the same Photo library as I was trying before. Woo Hoo!

So, it looks like there is something amiss in my user setup. Looking for some inspiration but it looks like others are having similar issues.

It could be a preference pane other than Photos' that is interfering with the process.  Here's a way to test for that:

    Trouble Shooting Preferences

NOTE: In Lion and Mountain Lion the Home/Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and press the Return key - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.

If you're running Mavericks, 10.9,  go to your Home folder and use the View âž™ Show View Options menu to bring the this window:

    Mavlibvis.png

    1 - close all applications.

2 - open your Home/Library folder and Option-drag (copy) the Preferences folder to the Desktop.

3 - select the contents of your Home/Library/Preferences folder and drag them into the Trash bin in the Dock.  You will be asked to provide your Admin password.

4 - reboot. Be sure to know your account's username and password as you will be asked to log in with it.

5 - run the application again and determine if the problem(s) is fixed.

6 - If the problem is fixed:

    A - open the working Home/Library/Preferences folder.

B - Open the Preferences  folder on the Desktop, select all of the contents and drag them into the working Home/Library/Preferences folder.

C - When the Copy window pops up check the "Apply to All" check box and then click on the Don't Replace or Skip button.

    D - reboot.

7 - If the problem is NOT fixed, drag the contents of the Preference folder on the Desktop into the Home/Library/Preference folder and replace the entire contents that were created by clicking on Replace.

8 - reboot and you're back as square one.

Note:  keep the Preference folder on the desktop until you're sure all registration info for your apps are working.  If not you can copy the required files from the desktop pref folder to the working one.

    Thx Old Toad.

I tried that but it didn't fix the problem but the test was done quite quickly so I'm not 100% sure of the result. I'll do the test again but I'm off on a short holiday so I'll get back to you in about two weeks. Thx again for your persistence in trying to help me.

Which version of Photos and Safari are you using out of curiosity Old Toad?

    I am running:

    Photos Version 1.0.1 (215.65.0)

    Safari Version 8.0.8 (10600.8.9)

That's what I'm running.  Don't know why I can import and you can't.  Too many posts to go back thru but have you tried from another user account on your Mac to see if the problem is system wide or limited to your user account?

Ja I did make a "test" account and that test account COULD "add image to photos" from safari!

So something must be mucked up on my main account.

Hi again, I'm back from holidays.

    To summarise:

    - I seem to have the same symptoms as Boykie88.

    - We all seem to be running the same versions of Photos Version 1.0.1 (215.65.0) and Safari Version 8.0.8 (10600.8.9)

    - When I use a newly created user, the process works as it should.

    - When I start with a 'clean' Preferences folder, the problem remains.

So, not sure what to try next. Maybe we have another app installed that is messing with this process.

    Thx

I seem to be having the same issue as Polgs and Boykie88. I had started another thread (Add to Photos menu item not working) before finding this one, but maybe it's better if I consolidate further responses here.

In my case, the "Add to Photos" context menu item in Safari etc. isn't working for all the regularly-used accounts on my Mac. Not sure if this is a factor, but all these accounts are non-administrators. I do have one administrator account on this machine which is rarely used, but "Add to Photos" DOES work for it (and it isn't a brand new account, either--it's just one that's rarely used).

I've tried giving one of the non-admin accounts administrator privileges in case that was the cause, but that didn't help the problem.

Also, in my case the Photos library for all the accounts was migrated from Aperture (and all the Photos libraries for these users are set as the System Photo Library). I'm not sure, but I think I never set up an Aperture photo library for the one administrator account that's working, so maybe there's something in that process that's gotten broken in the other accounts.

I've also tried reinstalling the 10.10.5 combo installer and repairing disk permissions, in case the problem was something broken in the system files, but that didn't fix the issue.

So, I too suspect something is broken at the user account level. I wonder if there's an easy way to make a list of files in ~/Library for the account that's working and one of the ones that isn't, and doing some sort of comparison?

Until a fix is found the workaround to use is to save the images to the Desktop, import into Photos from there and then delete the files from the Desktop.

If you're uploading via your browser then you should be able to see all of the photos via the Media browser in the browser:

    POpenMediaBrowser.jpg

If you are using the media browser and the recent photos are not showing up try closing Photos  and rebooting.  Then open Photos followed by Safari.
