But I don't see a dropdown... where would this dropdown be?

Sep 4, 2015 10:12 PM in response to AppleUsr12by Kappy,Open Mail Preferences. Click on Accounts in the toolbar. At the bottom select the button to create a new mail account. In the dropdown panel enter the email address and password. A second panel will now appear:
You will see the Account Type dropdown menu. Select POP and provide the requested information. Note that if you have a free Gmail account then that is a POP account. If you have the paid Gmail account, then that is IMAP-only. If you have the IMAP account you cannot change it to POP or vice-versa. This account type is unrelated to the browser type which may in fact be POP. I cannot imagine using anything but IMAP if you travel a lot.

Sep 5, 2015 6:09 AM in response to AppleUsr12by Barney-15E,When you start creating the account, choose Add Other Mail Account…
Enter the details on the next sheet, but hold down the Option key while clicking the Create button (it will change to Next).
From there you will have to manually configure all of the account settings.
It works the same from Internet Accounts system prefs, but you first choose Add Other Account…, then select Add a Mail account and click Create…
You will then be at the account details page as above.
