Q: Photo stream different on all devices

Hi there,

bought last week an mac book air. Activated my iCloud account and switched on photo stream. After several times switching photo stream off and on, i finally got 449 photos.

Same time my Iphone 6 has 660 photos inside camera roll and had 652 inside the stream.

Ipad air has 122 photos inside camera roll and had 641 inside stream.

After searching the internet I switched off and on the photo stream on all devices. With the result that i do not get more than 31 photos on my Iphone and 82 on my Ipad.

How to have the stream even on all devices?

Appreciate your answers

That is correct - PhotoStream is not a place and does not store photos - it is way to stream photos between devices - only the fewer of last 1000 or 30 day's photos are in the PhotoStream - on each device the PhotoStream displays all photos in the PhotoStream plus all photos added to the PhotoStream from that device - so the normal case is that on each device there are different numbers

If you want the exact same library on all devices you use iCloud Photo Library not MyPhotoStream

If you want My Photo Stream to show the same photos on all devices, you have to reset My Photo Stream on all devices at the same time.

See this Support document:  Get help using My Photo Stream - Apple Support

I see different photos in the My Photo Stream album on each of my devices

Your device will keep up to 1,000 photos, even if they're older than 30 days. Photos older than 30 days are removed from the iCloud server, so depending on when you enabled My Photo Stream, your devices might not have the same photos. Due to capacity, your Apple TV might display only your most recent photos.

Follow these steps to delete older photos from My Photo Stream and put your most current photos on all of your devices:

    1. If there are any photos in the My Photo Stream album you'd like to keep, save them to your device. Then, back up your photos and other data.
    2. From the Home screen on your iOS device, tap Settings > iCloud > Photos. Turn off My Photo Stream.
    3. Confirm that you want to Delete Photos.
    4. Turn on My Photo Stream again. iCloud will push your stored photos to your device.
    5. Repeat these steps for each device.

But Larry has valid point; resetting the photo stream on all devices will just reduce the number of photos you are seeing in My Photo Stream. You will not gain anything.  Use iCloud Photo Library, if you want to store photos in iCloud and not just transfer them between devices.

Thanks for your answers Larry and Léonie,

actually did reset Mac, iPhone and iPad at the same time. Took me days until the photos were coming back. Sometimes almost the whole day nothing happened yet suddenly photo stream started matching. Now I do have them almost equal again. 468/403 and 386.

As I understood as long the amount is below 1000, the 30 days validation does not count.

    Have dropbox as cloud.

Btw, have you experienced that the photo stream on Mac is sometimes present and sometimes not. Yet even I cannot see photo stream, new pictures from my phone will be found in my library from Mac.

Do you know where the Master track tab is on that version? Thanks.

Don't rely on that.  iCloud may keep more photos, if storage is no problem, but Apple only guarantees the 1000 photos - 30 days limit. Sometimes my "My PhotoSTream" dropped far below the 1000 photos limit.

That should only happen, if you are using iCloud Photo Library. Perhaps the preferences file for Photos is broken, if you do not have iCloud Photo Library enabled, but Photos is behaving like the option has been set.

    Try this:

    • Quit Photos if it is running.
    • Then open your User Library and remove the complete folder ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.Photos/
    • and the file   ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Photos.plist, if it exists

Your user library may still be hidden. To reveal the hidden User Library:

    • Bring the Finder forward by clicking on the Desktop or the Finder icon in the Dock.
    • Select your user/home folder (with the house icon in the Finder sidebar)
    • With that Finder window as the front window, press the key combination ⌘J to bring up the View options.
    • In the View options panel enable ’Show Library Folder’. That will make your user library folder visible in your Home folder.
    • Open your Home folder, then the Library folder, then Containers.
    • Move the complete folder ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.Photos to your desktop. Move the entire folder, not just the contents.
    • Remove   ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Photos.plist as well.

Now restart the Mac, launch Photos  and try again to show the photo stream.  If all is well, delete the folder from the Desktop.
