Q: I can not get my iTunes application to accept my debit card password consisting of numbers

I just keep trying and trying to add the right numbers, but red letters appear saying it will not accept it. Could it be wanting my apple password instead?

Apple does not accept debit cards.  You must use a credit card or purchase gift cards.

Some people here pay by debit card so some do work.  But there are regular requests like this that show debit cards to be a problem.  If the card the card has a Visa or Mastercard symbol and a 3 digit security code it should work.  This article shows debit card as an acceptable method under Family sharing.  Payment methods you can use in the iTunes Store, Mac App Store, App Store, and iBooks Store - Apple Support   If you are having trouble with your debit card with iTunes and App store, I suggest you contact your bank.

Your post title says you are asking about a password being used in your iTunes Application.  Read the fine print carefully above the box where you are being asked to supply your password.  I believe you will see you are being asked for your Apple ID password, and not anything to do with a credit or debit card.  That card has been independently associated with your iTunes account (at Settings > iTunes & App Stores).

UPDATE - OK, there is a way to set up your credit/debit card associated with iTunes in the iTunes app, but it certainly does not sound like that's what you are doing.  Instead, it sounds as if you're trying to purchase something and being asked for a password at that time.
