Last night I walked from the ball game (which my team won!) to my car at a fast pace. How fast? I don't know but I was passing everyone else. I recorded 15 minutes of 'Exercise" (no workout app going). I just checked and there was not a single heart-rate measurement during that time. My heart rate could not have determined that I was 'exercising.'

The questions that I think remain are exactly how fast must oen walk to register as 'exercise' and does it vary according to the person's personal data. The calories burned almost certainly would vary for age, weight, height, maybe historical resting heart rate.
Whether the calorie burn is accurate is another, and important, question. I have seen no reliable evidence either way.

Sep 6, 2015 12:33 PM in response to G3gatorby William Julien2,Calories burned and consumed is 100% relative to your metrics. Apple uses 4 metrics to do calculations. It is Age, Sex, Hight and Weight. All of these are entered into the Watch App when you set up your Watch. Granted there or several other metrics that could be used to make the algorithms more accurate like body composition (fat to lean ratio), VO2 Max, resting HR, Maximal HR and HR reserve to name a couple. Apple actually has a lot of research hours (over 33,000) invested and the shear bulk of data plus resources brought to bear looks promising.

Sep 6, 2015 11:12 PM in response to nick101by Taos462,I Always have my phone with me. I got around it by using the workout app and choosing "other" for my walk. As of now I have 184 minutes out of a 9 hour day. Which makes more sense considering the miles and comparing it to my other exercise apps... It's still annoying to have to activate another app. It should just work without the "workout" app... It did before...

And it was recording, as I stated, prior to using the "workout" app walking the same distance.... And BTW: The built-in HR monitor showed my HR was 44 bpm when it was actually 88 .... Maybe the monitor has failed.....

It's a brisk walk... There is no hard and fast rule for "brisk".... That's just something that has been made up.... It recorded when I was moving at 1.5 mph..... The system has flaws that need to be worked out...

So, your 3 MPH is out the door... besides, multiple people are having issues with it SUDDENLY.... Something must have happened or changed.... Or stopped "syncing"... So, looking at your posts - if you start a Workout, you get credit for the exercise, but if you don't start a workout, you get no credit? Is that correct?

Cycling is tricky because your arms not moving, and the accelerometer doesn't know whether your cycling or sitting in a car or whatever. That's why starting the Workout app can be important - it's telling the Watch what you're doing.

Sep 7, 2015 1:22 AM in response to nick101by Taos462,Cycling can't be that tricky (my FitBit tracks my cycling) .... The accelerometer takes into account total body movement... It also uses the GPS on my phone to measure distance and speed. It has always calculated SOME exercise. Since I've used the workout app that changed.... I wonder if it attempted to measure my heart rate, miscalculated it and reset the system to a different "goal". Makes since.... If it read my HR at 64 when in fact it was 128, then it would say I never have met my "goal". It's calculating everything else. Today I turned the HR monitor off and, guess what, it reads ALL activity. Move, Exercise, and Stand.... There must be a connection between the two...
