Q: Going crazy with unwanted startup programs

MacBook Pro mid 2010 with Yosemite 10.10.5

The following programs open when I startup/login: Mail, Word, iTunes, Preferences, Messages, Airport Utility.  I don't want any of them to startup.

I have tried the following possible solutions:

  • Deleted all login items from preferences/usergroups;
  • made sure none of dock items are set to open at login;
  • made sure that box to reopen windows is not checked when restarting or shutting down;
  • made sure that Library/Startup and System/Library/Startup folders are empty;
  • checked preferences for each of the programs to make sure they are not set to open at startup;
  • careful to shut down each program before turning off;
  • and finally, ran CleanMyMac3 when everything else failed to help.

I have not done anything with the Library/LaunchAgent or Launch Daemon or the System/Library/Launch Agent or Launch Daemon folders.  I'm not sure if I should touch those and, if so, what to delete and how to do it safely.

Suggestions, please!!

    A

    From the menu bar, select

               â–¹ System Preferences... â–¹ General

    and check the box marked

              Close windows when quitting an app

    B

    "CleanMyMac" is a scam and a common cause of instability and poor performance. Depending on what version you have, the developer's instructions may not completely remove it. Follow those instructions, then do as below.

    Back up all data before proceeding.

    Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:

    /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.macpaw.CleanMyMac2.Agent.plist

    Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select

              Services â–¹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)

    from the contextual menu.* A folder may open with an item selected. If it does, move the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password.

    Repeat with this line:

    /Library/PrivilegedHelperTools/com.macpaw.CleanMyMac2.Agent

    Restart the computer and empty the Trash.

    You may also have to remove one or more of these items in the same way:

    ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.macpaw.CleanMyMac.helperTool.plist
    ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.macpaw.CleanMyMac.volumeWatcher.plist
    ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.macpaw.CleanMyMac3.Scheduler.plist

    Never again install "CleanMyMac" or anything like it.

    *If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select

              Go â–¹ Go to Folder...

    from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

    This is not particularly helpful.  I had the problem before ever installing and using CleanMyMac.  I tried all the possible solutions I could think of.  None of them worked.  I then used CleanMyMac and it did not fix the problem either.  So, even if CleanMyMac is not a good program, it did not cause the problem with the unwanted startups and getting rid of it will not fix things.  So, I am still looking for other options.

    I recommend that you run EtreCheck:

         http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck

    and post its report here.

    List the contents of each of those folders, or attach a screenshot that captures all the information they contain. Multiple screenshots may be required. Sort by name please.

    Remove "CleanMyMac". Read below.

    To remove CleanMyMac 3 itself, use its Uninstaller module, followed by these additional steps:

    • Remove the file ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.macpaw.CleanMyMac3.Scheduler.plist

      • To navigate to that file, copy and paste the following line into the Finder's Go menu > Go To Folder...

    ~/Library/LaunchAgents/

      • Locate the following file and drag it to the Trash:

    com.macpaw.CleanMyMac3.Scheduler.plist

    • Then, open  (Apple menu) > System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login Items.
    • Select the item CleanMyMac3 Menu
    • Click the [—] (minus) button.
    • Restart your Mac.

    Beware that reinstalling OS X alone will have no effect on either removing CleanMyMac or reversing the damage it is capable of inflicting upon a system. To recover from the effects of having used it to modify OS X, the additional software you require and the essential files you may need follow the applicable recovery procedure below:

    • If you have a backup that you created prior to using CleanMyMac, now is the time to use it. For Time Machine, boot OS X Recovery, and at the Mac OS X Utilities screen, choose Restore from Time Machine Backup. Choose a date preceding the installation of CleanMyMac.
    • If you do not have a backup that predates the use of CleanMyMac, create one now. To do that read Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac.
      • The recovery procedure will require that you erase the Mac using OS X Recovery, and then create a new user whose contents will be empty. You will then be able to use Setup Assistant to migrate your essential documents including photos, music, work products and other essential files.
      • When doing so, select only your previous User account and do not select "Applications", "Computer and Network Settings" or "Other files and folders". De-select those choices.
      • Subsequent to using Setup Assistant, you will need to reinstall the essential software you may require, once again remembering to install software only from their original sources, and omitting all non-essential software.
      • "Non-essential software" is a broad category that includes but is not limited to third party "cleaning", "maintenance", and "anti-virus" products.

    To erase and install Yosemite read: OS X Yosemite: Erase and reinstall OS X

    To migrate your essential documents read: OS X Yosemite: Transfer your info from a computer or storage device and follow the procedure under Transfer info from a Time Machine backup or other storage device.

    This is not particularly helpful.

    Your response isn't helpful either, so that makes us even. Good luck.

    Linc is not saying that CMM3 caused your current problem but that it is essentially malware and can and will cause future problems.

    CleanMyMac is garbage.  It lets adware and other crap get into your system.  I'll be damned if I know why people continue installing it.

    Yes, it does. None of the files you enumerated should be deleted, with the exception of course of CleanMyMac as I explained earlier. I have an inherent distrust of anything that modifies OS X – including Google products which does so, extensively – although I do understand you installed CleanMyMac only subsequent to having encountering problems.

    There is no guarantee CMM has not altered OS X, which is the reason for my earlier comment. Reinstalling OS X is not likely to reverse the effects of having used it. The reason for programs automatically opening at startup remains unknown.

    As was suggested earlier Etrecheck will show the status of the launchd jobs. It also lists the login items too…

    http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck

    You can also disable login items by logging out, enter your users password to login, hold shift as you click the login button & keep it held down until your Desktop becomes usable. Apps should no longer launch automatically under this condition.

    Another option is to use a safe boot that disables all third party extensions.

    Try safe mode if your Mac doesn't finish starting up - Apple Support

    If nothing opens in with either of those modes it gives you a place to start looking for files that may be damaged or have incorrect permissions etc. Post back with results or an Etrecheck report.
