Q: iTunes64 Incompatible on Windows 8.1 64 bit?

I recently purchased a new laptop and have been unable to download iTunes for some reason.

Stats:

DELL Inspiron 15R

Windows 8.1

Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-4200U CPU @ 1.60GHz 2.30GHz

Installed memory (RAM): 8.00 GB (7.88 GB usable)

System Type: 64-bit Operating System, x64-based processor

Upon downloading iTunes (attempting with every update of iTunes 11 & 12) a green loading bar appears, reaches about 3/4ths of the way and then a window appears with a large white X on a red circle that states: "This installation package could not be opened. Verify that the package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer package."

Troubleshooting itunes64setup has returned "itunes64setup is incompatible." Which I can not make sense of given my OS is 64Bit. Is there something I'm missing?

    Hello AJ Thompson,

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!

I understand that you are having an issue installing iTunes on your Windows 8 computer. To begin troubleshooting, I would suggest reading over and working through the suggested steps located in the attached article.

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.

The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach.

Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.

The further information area has direct links to the current and recent builds in case you have problems downloading, need to revert to an older version or want to try the iTunes for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards) release as a workaround for installation or performance issues, or compatibility with QuickTime or third party software.

Your library and device backups should be unaffected by these steps but there are links to backup and recovery advice should it be needed.

If the issue persists and you have a 64-bit system try the for older video cards version which is a 64-bit installer for mostly 32-bit code, similar to all 64-bit versions of iTunes up to 12.1.

If you've tried the above then see the method in Install missing components. What component fails to install, and what error message does it give? See this post for steps to produce detailed logs of the installation which may reveal why iTunes won't install.

Oh my, going through the articles was what I spent two days going through before I posted here but I'll try again and see if I can give more details.

If iTunes for Windows Vista or later won't open, stops responding, or unexpectedly quits, follow the steps below to resolve the issue.

Before you start, download and install the latest available Windows updates for your PC and make sure that you have the latest version of iTunes.

-Not using XP I have 8.1

-There is no Error 7 of Error 2 message

-Installation failed with and without iOS device connected

-Installation attempt before and after Windows Update made no difference

-Can't have the latest version of iTunes it won't download to begin with

    Start iTunes in Safe Mode

-Same message upon attempt:  "This installation package could not be opened. Verify that the package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer package."

Disconnect your computer from the Internet

-This is used for updating not installing but attempting it I received the same message: "This installation package could not be opened. Verify that the package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer package."

    Create a new user account

    -Attempted. Failed. Same message.

Create a new iTunes library to see if the issue occurs in a new library.

-Can't install iTunes to even create a library much less make a new one.

Check for issues with content files.

-Can't check content files because failing installation means I don't have any to check.

    Check for potentially unwanted programs.

-No virus or malware detected...again. No conflicting programs found...again.

Installed programs: Jarte and Ulead Photo Express-neither found to be in conflict with iTunes.

Removing and Reinstalling iTunes and other software components.

Remove all of these items in the following order:

    • iTunes
    (see note 1 below)
    • Apple Software Update
    • Apple Mobile Device Support
    (see note 1)
    • iCloud                  (if present)
    • MobileMe             (if present)
    (see note 2)
    • Bonjour
    (see note 1)
    • Apple Application Support
    (see note 1)

None of these programs existed on my computer to begin with so can not be removed.

    Reboot your computer.

    Changed nothing. Same error message.

Delete any of the following folders where they can be found:      (see note 3)

    • C:\Program Files\Bonjour
    • C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple
    • C:\Program Files\iPod
    • C:\Program Files\iTunes

    also on 64-bit systems:

    • C:\Program Files (x86)\Bonjour
    • C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple
    • C:\Program Files (x86)\iPod
    • C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes

and where C:\ may need to replaced with the drive letter of your system drive if different.

None of these files exist on my computer and can not be deleted either.

Download the iTunes setup file and run it to install. Use an account with administrative rights. This can usually be achieved by right-clicking on the downloaded file and selecting Run as... or Run as Administrator. In some cases a combination of Shift or Ctrl keys may be required for the option to show, or it may not be necessary.

Ran setup as Administrator-same error message received.

    Older Versions:

    iTunes 12.2.1.16 for Windows (64-bit) - iTunes6464Setup.exe

FAILED. Error Message: "This installation package could not be opened. Verify that the package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer package."

    iTunes 12.2.1.16 for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards) (Windows 7 or later) - itunes64setup.exe (2015-07-13)

FAILED. Error Message: "This installation package could not be opened. Verify that the package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer package."

    iTunes 12.2.0.145 for Windows (64-bit) - itunes6464setup.exe

FAILED. Error Message: "This installation package could not be opened. Verify that the package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer package."

    iTunes 12.2.0.145 for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards) - itunes64setup.exe (2015-06-30)

FAILED. Error Message: "This installation package could not be opened. Verify that the package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer package."

Your library and device backups should be unaffected by these steps but there are links to backup and recovery advice should it be needed.

This is kind of useless since I can't make one to begin with.

    Installing Missing Components

No missing/outdated components upon extraction. Same message upon attempt of installation afterwards:"This installation package could not be opened. Verify that the package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer package."

Log files revealed no "Error" or "Failed" message upon any line.

Again the only problem I've managed to locate is troubleshooting the base iTunes64setup.exe file which returned:

    "This program is incompatible."

Sound like your Windows Installer Service is broken, or something is corrupting your downloads. Did you install 7-Zip or did you already have it?

If my Windows Installer Service is broken wouldn't it have not been to download Windows Updates? As for corrupted downloads I have no idea.

I downloaded 7-Zip but uninstalled it when extracting files from iTunes installation failed to give me any results. Like I said besides troubleshooting the iTunessetup.exe file I haven't found anything else wrong. Which is why this has been so frustrating.

You could try clearing your browser's cache and changing your DNS settings to a public DNS service like Google DNS. This should take any ISP based caching out of the loop, then try downloading again. Or take a copy of the download from a known good machine on a USB drive.
