Q: Device locked bug - endless loop

Often my watch will not unlock properly.   I get the "Device Locked" error and instructions to unlock my phone.   I follow the instructions and unlock my phone and the watch will still not unlock.   When I try to go into the apple watch app to do anything on my watch I get an error saying "your watch is unlocked, please unlock your watch"   Ugh!   Are you kidding me!?!?!

    Hi

    Restart one or both devices:

Restart iPhone: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the red slider appears; Drag the slider to turn your iPhone off; When it has finished turning off, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button again until you see the Apple logo.

Restart Apple Watch: Press and hold the side button until you see the Power Off slider; Drag the slider to turn off completely; Afterwards, press and hold the side button until you see the Apple logo.

You might prefer to turn Wrist Detection on and also to turn on Passcode on your watch:

    - In the Apple Watch app, go to: My Watch (bottom left hand tab) > General > Wrist Detection - on.

    - My Watch > Passcode > Turn Passcode on (choose either a Simple 4-digit passcode or a longer one).

    - Still within the Passcode settings screen, also enable Unlock with iPhone.

After putting it on your wrist, your watch will then unlock after whatever you do first: either unlocking your watch manually or unlocking your iPhone. Once on your wrist and unlocked, it will then stay unlocked until removed (when it will lock again automatically). Wrist Detection also enables you to use Activate on Wrist Raise.

Using a Passcode can also avoid other potential problems, such as:

    - If you are without your iPhone, your watch may become locked after temporarily losing contact with your wrist.

    - If your iPhone gets misplaced or stolen.

Wrist Detection and a passcode are also required in order to use Apple Pay on Apple Watch.

Thank you for your response, but this truly is a bug. Restarting my iphone and watch every time is not a fix.   My iphone 6 is used for business and the MDM has turned off the simple passcode option in the watch app.  .  This issue occurs routinely and its a major inconvenience.    Apple aims to target the enterprise market (a al IBM partnership) and most MDM's will insist that the watch passcode mirror iphone.   The watch should mirror my phone - when I have my iphone unlocked and my watch is on my wrist, my watch should immediately be unlocked - no exceptions.  I need a watch that functions like a watch, not a buggy device that sort of acts like a watch.   Apple support should take this issue seriously.

    Hi

You did not explain that your iPhone and Apple Watch have passcode restrictions that are enforced via Mobile Device Management.

In the first instance, contact your device administrator. Check that, when they configured your devices, they were aware of the rules that apply to passcode restrictions on Apple Watch when it is paired to a managed iPhone:

Share this link: Setting passcode restrictions for an Apple Watch - Apple Support

You say that Simple Passcode has been disabled. Check what specific passcode restrictions have been applied. For example, if you are required to set an iPhone passcode of at least 6 digits with no repeating digits, then - to be able to use Passcode on your watch - you would also need to create an Apple Watch passcode that satisfies the same requirements.

If there is a restriction that requires passcodes to contain letters or special characters on your iPhone, then you won't be able to set a passcode on your watch and will instead need to use Unlock with iPhone.

In that case, ensure that your watch is always worn snugly on your wrist. If you have Wrist Detection enabled, wearing it loosely can cause the watch to lose contact with your wrist and become locked (as if you had removed it).

If you remain concerned that your watch has a hardware issue with Wrist Detection, contact Apple Support with a view to having your watch checked and, if necessary, sent for repair / replacement under warranty: https://www.apple.com/support/watch/contact/

This is a user-based technical support community, not Apple Support, and I have tried my best to help you here.

If you would prefer to seek help directly from Apple, contact Apple Support who I'm sure will also treat your questions seriously:

You may also find that it helps to unpair and re-pair your Apple Watch and iPhone, setting a passcode during set up that meets the MDM passcode criteria (if this is possible - see above regarding restrictions).

The Apple Watch app on your iPhone takes backups of your watch automatically, including a fresh backup when unpairing via the app. When setting it up again after unpairing, choose to restore your Apple Watch from backup when offered the option (by the iPhone Apple Watch app). Most data and settings will be restored, with only a few exclusions: calibration data (from Workout and Activity apps), synced playlists, cards used for Apple Pay on your watch, watch passcode.

Hopefully, you have tried to restart the Apple Watch and iPhone regularly, but sometimes that doesn't do. Try holding down both buttons on both devices until the screens go blank and later show an Apple logo. It will immediately reboot and go back to the watch face and lock screen, allowing you to unlock both. Hope this helps!

I have the same issue. Have security for work on my iPhone so they lock down security automatically. If my phone is unlocked when I put on the watch, it will not recognize that my iPhone is unlocked no matter what I do. I have to restart the watch (while making sure that the iPhone is locked). As long as I lock my phone BEFORE I put on the watch it works just fine. Absolutely a bug, but locking the phone first is a good workaround!
