Q: automatically detect and maintain account settings

I'm having problem with sending mail via SMTP where the error is username and password does not match.  My host wants me to try to uncheck "Automatically detect and maintain account settings" that I access through Mail > Preferences > Accounts, but that checkbox is greyed out and cannot be changed.  How can I enable this checkbox?

Thanks!

Let's go back to the original question.

From the Mail menu bar, select

              Window Connection Doctor

Click the Show Detail button. A drawer opens. Click Check Again and post the text that appears.

Anonymize any private information before posting. That means names, email addresses, contents of messages, and anything else that you don't want to make public.

Please review the instructions in my last comment and try again. If the instructions are unclear, specify what you don't understand.

Sorry, my bad.  Did a log instead as it can limit to only the account in question:

That's not the information I asked for, and it's a screenshot, not text. I can't tell from that what the problem is.

You have a red indicator symbol for SMTP (sending)

    EDIT SMTP SETTINGS

In Accounts window > Outgoing Mail Server SMTP:  select to Edit SMTP Server list... from popup.

Select account in the list.(It's not uncommon to find extra SMTP servers listed. When you remove account, Mail does not delete the smtp info. You might need to do some clean up in the list to remove the extras.)

    Under Advanced Tab:

Apple defaults to the default ports (25,465, 587) but some servers prefer a custom port. Check to see what port they recommend. Gmail for example likes 465, Outlook.com 587.

Verify if your server require SSL.

User Name. Enter full email address  eg.  UserName@gmail.com

Add password if it is blank.(If you have two step authentication setup, you'll need to get an app specific password )

Open Connection Doctor under Window in the Menu bar.

Do you see green symbols now for your accounts?
