From the 4 option menu select Disk Utility.
Run Disk Utility>First Aid, Verify and Repair.

No, that error is not serious. If you have access to another Mac, try Target Disk Mode:

If that does not work, let me know and we will try other options.

I won't have access to other Macbook for a few days.
While I was verifying and repairing a pop up just appeared saying "Disk Utility stopped repairing Macintosh HD".....disk utility can't repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files.
Is there a way to do this safely? I have a lot of family photos and documents that are irreplaceable:( Any way I can save files to my external HD without waiting days at the Mac Store???
I Cannot thank you enough for all of your help! My apologies for being completely MacBook illiterate.

How much you will be able to recover is an open question. You will find out soon enough.
You will need an external HDD formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled) to copy the data to.
Ciao.
