Q: AEBS: Turning on NAT-PMP to improve Back to my Mac performance gives "Double-NAT" error

I use my AEBS in Bridge mode. It's connected to my ADSL modem using a LAN cable and extends the network over wifi.

I receive a message in Sys Pref-iCloud that performance could be improved by turning on NAT-PMP. But when I do as directed -- this article and this article --

AirPort Utility reports a "double-NAT" error.

As I understand it, for my network setup I need to use the AEBS in Bridge mode. The ADSL modem is on the ground floor and I use the AEBS to extend for the three floors above.

Is there a way to get around the iCloud error with an AEBS in Bridge mode?

Thanks very much in advance

Philip

As you are aware when in bridge mode your AirPort's NAT & DHCP services are disabled. In order to use NAT-PMP, the NAT service would have to be enabled and thus the Double NAT error message.

The issue is that your ADSL modem is not a simple modem but, most likely, a combination modem and Internet router ... unfortunately one that doesn't support NAT-PMP. I am guessing that you are using Back to My Mac with your iCloud account. If so, your only solution may be to either "live with" the current performance issue or change your "modem" for a simple modem and AirPort base station that does support this protocol.

Thank you very much for the quick reply. You're right, it's a combined router/modem - sorry I should have included that info in the original post. I'll have a look but I don't think it supports NAT-PMP.

BTMM will use UPNP without problems from a computer.. almost every router made (except apple) supports it.. at least to some extent.

You can try bridging the modem and using pppoe client on the AE but this has varying issues. It just doesn't work very well.

If you want remote access and BTMM is not working well there are plenty of alternatives.. and if the dsl router is decent model should work even better than AE with BTMM..

The problem people forget is upload on ADSL is extremely slow.. so anytime you remote into the network... work on the fact that you have 800Kbps max real world speed in most cases.

    Thank you for the reply.

Just so I understand - if I enable UPNP on the router/modem, will iCloud's message concerning performance go away?

I am not sure.. but if the Airport is bridged then UPNP active on the router.. the port opening should work fine. Apple specifically say UPNP on router matches the conditions for port opening.. so try it.. if it fails then not all UPNP is created equal and you will need to fiddle some more... bridge out the modem and try using PPPOE on the airport and see if that fixes the problem.
